Wolf Portrait

Postby Wep'keer » Fri May 20, 2011 12:03 pm

I know this probably doesn't belong in intermediate, but as it states: " For experienced artists looking for some criticism and commentary from other artists"-aannnd...I need it. To start off, I decided to try a different style of drawing on Oekaki instead of my regular routine, and I reaallly need some constructive criticism from others. Any help/tips I can get, maybe someone even has a tutorial? I'm a pretty good pencil artist in real life, but I guess computer art is a completely different medium for me, and I'm having a hard time getting my skills on Oekaki.
The ref I used for this is on a 2010 wolf calendar I have-Wolf head reference

And this is what I drew in RL, using the same ref-Surik

Critique? Comments? ^.^

(Surik(pronounced sher-eek) is the title of that drawing, btw. He's character in a book I'm writing. ;))

This is really great, but may I give you a little hint? Use the smudge tool (size 14 or so) and go over the fur with that! It will make it MORE great!

You asked for criticism, so I give you criticism. I hope I don't scare you away x3

The wolf anatomy is really great, actually, and I can see where you're going with the style. However, the coloring could use some work. Right now this drawing looks quite sketchy because you can see the white background through the fur. I'm not saying it looks bad, but it would be awkward to have a wolf with the background color showing through ,say, a drawing with a forest behind it.

I would make another transparent layer under the layer you made the fur and color the wolf with that, then go back to the fur layer and smudge it. The fur itself is good, because its flowing the right way, and altogether this is a pretty decent drawing, but there is always room for improvement. Alright, this is all the critique I have for now, so I hoped this proved insightful. (doubt it xD)

You are definitely right Frostdragon-there is always room for improvement. That's why I decided to post here. ^.^
