Range Trotter #4041

Postby faentofheart » Wed Aug 09, 2023 12:05 pm

Range Trotters are the result of crossbreeding Orlov Trotters, Finnhorses, Welsh Cobs (section C & D) and Hanoverians. Later crosses of Quarter Horses, Paint and Appaloosas to gain color and to give a boost to their hardiness. With a height average of 13-15 hands, they're a hardy breed with characteristics for various disciplines.

Created for use as work, carriage and leisure riding horses originally, they now serve as long-distance range horses, such as work with Park Rangers and mounted officers.

Willing and eager personalities, most are quickly trained to be bombproof and therefore trusted mounts in all lines of work; some are being seen in local show jumping competitions, others are notably used in therapeutic sessions for their calm temperaments. Harness races and endurance trials are common for the breed, as they are able to sustain an extended trot without tire. Cross-Country competitions see some of the taller Trotters, but due to their cob lineage this is still uncommon.

Despite the variety of competitions and work these horses are being seen in, they are still famously skilled as endurance racers. Many competitors have chosen Range Trotters due to their tireless work ethic, as well as the ease in which they can be trained. Many have become champions in endurance trials, and they have quickly become a sought after breed for their natural ability.

Show Name: RRS Roll the Dice
Barn Name: Dice
Gender: Stallion
Height: 14.3 hh
Halter Color: Something dice or board games-inspired
Prompt:
Dice is quite fond of his spots: they're a reminder that he wasn't always the striking stallion he's become.

See, Dice was not an attractive foal. At birth he looked 'put together from spare parts'': his neck was too short, his legs were far too long, and he'd clearly stolen his ears from a donkey. His foal coat was even worse! It couldn't decide whether it wanted to be black or bay or the color of stale swamp water. His breeders were mortified. They'd put so much thought and effort into breeding this poor little colt and somehow it had all gone wrong.

But foals, like all babies, don't stay skrunkled-up newborns for long. Like his agemates, Dice grew. He shed his foal coat, revealing an adult coat the color of polished snowflake obsidian. He grew into the lanky promise of his too-long legs, outgrowing his dam and sire in the process.

(He never quite grew into his ears, but without the rest of that mess going on, the effect is more... rakish than foolish.)

Nowadays Dice turns heads with every step, but he's never forgotten what it felt like to be the living incarnation of 'misfortune'.

Show Name: Don't Get Me Wrong
Barn Name: Oliver
Gender: Stallion
Height: 14 hh
Halter Color: artist choice
Prompt:
Oliver has mixed feelings about his spots. Sometimes he hates them and tries to cover himself in mud to make them less visible. Don't make me wrong, they are cool and everyone appreciate them, but that's exactly the point. Oliver hates having all the attention focused on himself. When he is with other horses, everyone always point at him screaming: "Look, that is a spotty horse! So pretty!". He hates that. That's also the reason why he always wants to wear his blanket: it covers some of the spots. However, when he is alone, Oliver often looks at his reflection on water and admire himself. Yeah, he's really pretty, he must admit that!

Gender: Stallion
Height: 15h
Halter Color: Turquoise
Prompt:
Tigo has never been particularly concerned about appearances, but maybe that’s because he’s never been made to worry about them. Humans have always been so fascinated with his coat, stablehands always call him “a beaut” and visitors often point him out first in the fields. When traveling for shows there seems to be a disproportionate amount of people who walk very slowly by his stall. He doesn’t get it, personally, but he appreciates the attention. The farm he was born on specialized in Appaloosas & appaloosa-coated horses, he thought all horses had spots until he was sold off! He finds the sheer variety of markings he encounters fascinating.
