Range Trotters are the result of crossbreeding Orlov Trotters, Finnhorses, Welsh Cobs (section C & D) and Hanoverians. Later crosses of Quarter Horses, Paint and Appaloosas to gain color and to give a boost to their hardiness.With a height average of 13-15 hands, they're a hardy breed with characteristics for various disciplines.

Created for use as work, carriage and leisure riding horses originally, they now serve as long-distance range horses, such as work with Park Rangers and mounted officers.

Willing and eager personalities, most are quickly trained to be bombproof and therefore trusted mounts in all lines of work; some are being seen in local show jumping competitions, others are notably used in therapeutic sessions for their calm temperaments. Harness races and endurance trials are common for the breed, as they are able to sustain an extended trot without tire. Cross-Country competitions see some of the taller Trotters, but due to their cob lineage this is still uncommon.

Despite the variety of competitions and work these horses are being seen in, they are still famously skilled as endurance racers. Many competitors have chosen Range Trotters due to their tireless work ethic, as well as the ease in which they can be trained. Many have become champions in endurance trials, and they have quickly become a sought after breed for their natural ability.

Prompt: Kev left a bunch of food scraps (things he'd collected; bites of apples, sugar cubes, cookies) in the corner of the empty stall and it attracted a lot of small critters. This sounds innocuous but one of our trotters, Mexico, is terrified of things smaller than herself. He told her that her favourite treat was waiting in the empty stall (lied and said they were transferring her to it) and she about tore the door off trying to get out once she saw what was waiting inside. No skunks or possums were hurt in the prank, thankfully. We can safely say they were just as scared as Mexico was, though!

Prompt: This Trotter has been a problem horse since day one, though I guess I should have seen that coming going by looks alone and the nature of the beast. In the pasture Squashling will find the most secluded parts of the area to hide and lies in wait until anyone comes by, man, horse, or otherwise, and will jump out from behind the trees and from the dark to jumpscare them! He is also impossible to catch or bring in, he'll walk up to you with your halter or lead rope and give you false hope that you can put it on him to lead him in. Just as you go to put it on he'll suddenly turn tail and prance away, snorting and tossing his head as if he were laughing at your feeble, humanly attempts to catch him. This process will repeat itself multiple times until all of our stable hands give up and stop trying to bring him in, and just leave him out in the pasture by himself until he gets tired of being alone and comes down to the barn to be brought in. There were also several occasions where he laid down flat on the ground in the pasture and didn't move at all, causing a panic for the workers thinking he was dead, until they rushed up to him, and he suddenly got up and neighing at them like he was laughing again, prancing away and once again refusing to be caught. He repeated this behavior multiple times until the stable hands eventually stopped buying it and just ignored him, which seemed to make him very angry that he couldn't fool them anymore, snorting like he was snorting hellfire from his nostrils and pawing at the earth like a bull. When you put him in the crossties for grooming or a bath, he'll knock over all the tools in sight and then keep doing it over and over again like he enjoys making us pick them up as payment for his 'torturous time' in the wash stall.
There is really nothing that you can't stop this horse from getting into or doing, including picking the locks to his pasture and stall, freeing himself and the others, until we had to basically padlock everything that belongs to him. Sometimes he makes me so mad I think about selling him or adopting him out, but the more I think about it, the more I don't think I could do it. I do always need a laugh every now and then, and he's certainly good for one.
