The air is cooling off these days, the trees are adorned in their seasonal finest. You wore a jacket today, and clutch it closer as a crisp breeze whips along the road you're following. Next time you will need a scarf, you think, watching a flurry of red-gold leaves spin around you as they fall beautifully to their final resting places. The track is packed dirt, not yet muddy with autumn rains and winter snows. Wagon ruts have worn a tread into the dirt, the lines between points A and B and beyond.
One such wagon is parked ahead, and it's the fire burning merrily beside it that catches your attention as the sun rests low in the sky. Painted in hues that were brilliant at one time, it's clear this caravan has seen better days, and you are mostly convinced to walk right past it on your way to wherever you're meant to be going. A faded sign painted on the side piques your interest, however, and the business-like pace you had adopted only moments ago fades into a curious stroll as you read:
Fortunes Told, the Future Made Known!
Healthy skepticism nudges the back of your mind, reminding you of missing person's reports and your not-too-healthy bank account. You move to leave, only to halt again as a diminutive figure appears around the backside of the wagon where the sounds of munching equine are coming from.
"Cup of tea?" They ask, moving toward the kettle currently suspended over the crackling flames. "To keep your hands warm on your way to wherever you're headed."
It would be rude to deny it now that you're here, and they look harmless enough. Two chipped mugs are poured full of near-boiling water when you nod your consent, and your host gestures that you may chose whichever you want. One is squat and painted with green and white flowers, the other is taller and striped red and blue. Once you choose your cup, a selection of loose teas are brought out, each in their own little glass jar.
"Let's see here... today we have Chocolate Mint, Orange Hibiscus Green, Dandelion Ginger, and a lovely Earl Grey I picked up just this morning. Take your pick."
You do, and so does your host, and soon the warm aromas of steeping tea is rising to meet you.
"We have a few minutes while that's getting strong; would you like me to tell you your fortune while we wait?" They ask, pulling a worn deck of cards from a bag at their feet. The skin on the back of your neck prickles. This was why you'd stopped, after all.
The cards are shuffled, the deck cut, and one by one the cryptic images are placed and revealed. Brow creased in concentration, the reader nods and hmms as your future comes to light...

The story is told, the tea drunk, and you offer the mysterious figure what money you had in your pocket. They take it, and after glancing inside your now empty mug, offer you a length of black, waxy rope, "just in case". You continue on your way, the rope a heavy reminder in your hands of what you have learned.
