The days were long under the sweltering heat of the sun, shimmering over the endless dunes as it sank below the horizon. Graves' hat weighed heavily on his head more so than usual as the exhaustion from a day of work was felt deep within his bones. His paws sank into the sand, soaking up the fleeting warmth beneath them, knowing that the desert would soon chill him to the bone. But this cowboy didn't mind how fickle the land could be; this was where he grew up, the only place he would ever call home.
Everyone who knew Graves could talk only of how hard he worked, and for good reason. Most times, he was seen around town doing hard labour, and on his very rare days off, he would vanish without a trace, only returning the next morning to start all over again.
But where exactly did he go? It was Graves' best-kept secret; a few hours out of town lay a small oasis, his sanctuary. Three cacti and a pool of water were his only companions for the evening, but that was all he needed to enjoy the show: as the last of the sun's light died out, millions of stars glittered overhead, spattering the skies with vibrant specks of light. Graves settled down into the still-warm sand, violet eyes fixated on the mesmerising display above him, only to be reflected back within them. It was his hard-earned reward, his moment of solitude, the peace that was granted only on the rarest, longest of days.
