Syifts use the skull of animals to mimic prey, of course it doesn't exactly work at first- but if the Syift manage to lay a tentacle on their prey and their toxic slime touches the animal, it causes the prey to hallucinate and think the Syift is their young- the prey gets a sudden urge to take care of the Syift. Syift gets treated like royalty and is taken care of, even at the expense of the prey getting hurt or wounded. the prey animal continues to wear itself out until it cannot physically move- and when the prey can no longer take care of the syift the syift consumes and continue to find a new prey.
i was going to look for species generators that i could use as inspiration for new companions for chicoons, but this idea was wayyyy too gruesome lmao- still, a pretty cool character though!
