Prompt:For a long while, Foxwatcher had no clue where her name came from. She never got a clear answer from her mother, all she got was a noncommittal purr and a rough wash before her mother went out to hunt. It.. almost hurt, not knowing why she was named after the one thing that her mother hated the most. A fox. The thing that has taken not only her father, but her siblings too. Left her mother, Fernbelly, with just her.
She didn't learn just what had happened that day until she was about to become a warrior. Her mother approached her then, told her how proud she was of Foxpaw, how amazing they had done in their training.
But Fernbelly also wanted to tell her only remaining kit just why she was named after the thing that had taken everything from her, and warn her that her warrior name had already been chosen. By the stars, by their leader.
Foxwatcher. Named after the tragedy that struck their clans many, many moons ago at that point.
Foxes had infiltrated the camp one leafbare, when the rest of the clan was out fighting another group off. Everybody, everything was hungry, every animal was clinging to life.
And because of that, the foxes took everything they could. Took the prey the clan had to take from the thunder path, took the minimal amount of proper prey they had found. And finally, took the barely-weaned kits from their nest. Foxwatcher's father was supposed to be watching them that day. Fernbelly had been sent to fight, more demanded to than anything, she was one of their best fighters. She had to be out there.
Foxwatcher's father though.. he had been out of the camp for just a moment, helping the medicine cat get cobwebs. When he came back, he found the foxes in the middle of taking his kits. He fought with everything he could, poured all the anger of a father into his movements. But it wasn't enough. He died that day, protecting his family. Foxwatcher and her sister got taken, presumably to be eaten later, maybe for the foxes' own kits.
That would've been ironic, foxkit being fed to a couple of fox kits.
But it apparently wasn't meant to be, for when the battle was done and the scene was discovered, the two kits were tracked down as fast as they could be.
The clan was able to lure the foxes, get the kits. They were lucky that the foxes were still weak with starvation, otherwise, there's no telling the damage they could have caused.
They only found foxkit though, no other kits to be seen. She was sitting there, staring at the foxes, staring at the young ones. Untouched, unbothered. No one understood it. The fox kits were hungry, it was obvious, but somehow they couldn't touch the kit.
That's why she got her name, somehow she sat and she watched, even in the face of her own death. And she lived.
