Katie sits next to Evelyn.
She always talks to her and she very rarely responds, but Kat knows she's listening.
Evelyn was that quiet kid, never had a long conversation with anyone, and she almost never talked. She'd answer the professors questions directly and stay silent right after, keeping her answer as concrete as possible. She liked reading online books at the recess, and drawing during classes.
Katie came into the classroom saying hello to Evelyn, and almost tripped. Evelyn responded by waving her hand; Kat hated when she did that because it left her with an empty feeling, like a part of her routine was missing. She left the backpack under her seat and sat down next to Evelyn. The teacher wasn't there yet because they were both early, so she decided to start a conversation with her.
"How are you, Eve?" She asked, Evelyn was surprised by the nickname.
"Why the nickname?"
"Oh, Just thought it would be better than saying Evelyn, sorry for not asking before." Kat responded.
She gave her a soft smile and said "It's okay, I'm doing good by the way, how are you?"
"I'm happy because I'm talking with a beautiful girl". She responded, to which Eve softly giggled.
"Well if that's the case, I'm happy too".
The teacher arrived at that moment, interrupting their conversation.
Katie was very happy, that was one of their longest conversations she had with her until now, and she even returned the compliment.
Katie liked flirting with Evelyn and complimenting her to make her smile, to hear her laugh, she wanted her to be happy, no not be completely alone and in silence, isolated.
She was fine with her being alone, she knows she liked that, but she didn't want her to be alone and sad. And if that meant that she'd talk to her occasionally and interrupt her silence, then she'd do it gladly.
She didn't realize it, but she was slowly falling for her.
For her soft smile, which she gave when Katie did or said something nice.
For her cute and soft giggle she'd let it when she made a joke.
For her eyes, her hair, her mannerisms, the way she walked, how she sat, the face she made when concentrating on reading.
She couldn't help but keep staring at her. At her beauty. Evelyn didn't seem to mind that, and sometimes she'd look at her too, and just smile.
She fell for the short responses she gave to her. The responses that became longer everyday. Even the silence that they shared, which turned into a comfortable silence, a safe silence, an understanding silence.
They understood each other, they understood why they were different.
Their silence was so loud, yet so nice, that neither of them tried to break it when it happened.
Without noticing, they had synced up.
They developed a connection that changed them together.
Evelyn was more open now, she didn't sit in the farthest corner anymore, she didn't ignore everyone anymore.
Katie didn't interrupt the class anymore, she didn't spend her entire day talking and screaming with others.
They talked with each other frequently, but it felt different. It was just them and their secrets, and their laughter and their silence.
Their connection and her love.
The love she had for her, which she didn't know if it was mutual or not, and was too afraid to ask, to give a hint.
Too scared to do something other than thinking about her in silence for days, other than to look at her lovingly hoping that she'd notice without any clues given.
But she didn't, because no one can do that.
Evelyn didn't even pay attention to her own feelings, she didn't even know exactly what she felt for Kat, how could she be able to tell what Katie was feeling?
