"It's time to go home now Mothwatcher. Go and use what you have learned. Be The Keeper of my Secrets."Mothwatcher blinked open her eyes, watching the large snow white moon moth flutter up from her nose and flitted back to the branches of the tree in front of her. The sight was quite unearthly; the trunk of the tree had been stripped of its bark, and the elements had taken its toll on the exposed wood, smoothing and bleaching it so it looked almost like bone. Thousands of moths filled the branches of the dead tree, their wings looking like leaves dancing in a ghostly wind. Carved into the trunk of the tree were the phases of the moon. The odd tree was nestled in the middle of some kind of ruined Upwalker structure, the remnants of the stone walls surrounding the area.
Mothwatcher looked up at the sky above her- it appeared to be early morning. She must have been here all night! She had to get home, and tell her clan about her discovery! She rose to her paws, her joints aching from having been in one position for so long. She stretched out her muscles as best she could, and turned for home.
----------
"Mistyleaf?!"
Of course, her clanmates wouldn't know about her new name yet. They would still know her as Mistyleaf. Mothwatcher turned and smiled as a golden and white she-cat dashed across the meadow towards her. "Sweetpaw!" she called out to her apprentice, happy to see the young she-cat. Something looked different about her, but she couldn't quite place it.
"It IS you!" Sweetpaw exclaimed, pressing her face to the blue she-cat's shoulder. "We were so worried! Oh, and it's Sweetbriar now."
Mothwatcher blinked in surprise - she'd been gone only for a night and they'd named her apprentice without her? She hadn't even had her final test yet... "Oh, congratulations Sweetbriar!" she replied, confusion clouding her tone ever so slightly.
"We have to get back to the camp! Everyone will be so happy to see you're alright!" Sweetbriar bounded back across the meadow towards their camp. Mothwatcher followed, somewhat reluctantly. Something didn't feel quite right.

Once they reached the clear walls camp (an abandoned greenhouse), Sweetbriar ran ahead, and Mothwatcher heard a shriek. Moments later, a brown and silver blur shot out of the camp, barreling towards her.
The blur crashed into her, knocking her off her paws. Suddenly something was batting roughly at her ears with just a hint of claws. Once she got her bearings, she managed to squirm out from under the other cat, who was puffed up and glaring daggers at her, snarling.
“Where have you
BEEN?!” Spat the chocolate silver point. “We thought we lost you, Mistyleaf. We
MOURNED YOU!”
“Mourned me? I was only gone overnight!” Mothwatcher shook her head in confusion.
“You’ve been gone for 4 whole seasons.”
Mothwatcher blinked in shock. That…. That couldn’t be possible?! ...Could it?
Birchfrost lashed her tail angrily. “I’ll ask again. Where. Have. You. Been?! What could have been so important that you left your research without a word? Left us? Left
me?!”
Mothwatcher’s ears pinned back in guilt. She’d never meant to cause anyone pain- she had never even meant to be gone this long! “I didn’t mean to leave, I swear! But I found it, Birchfrost. I found what we’ve been looking for.”
Then, Mothwatcher told her story. She explained how she’d been studying the stars on Moon Stare’s Hill when a large white moth fluttered past her. She couldn’t explain it, but something compelled her to follow it. The moth led her to the ruins with the strange tree. Then it landed on her nose, and her vision went white.
Next thing she knew, she was back in the forest, although the trees looked older. Suddenly, a snow white cat with sparkling fur appeared before her- Moon Stare herself. She said she’d been waiting for her; her Moth Watcher.
The two talked all night, and Moon Stare divulged many of the secrets they had been searching for; ones they had thought had been lost to time. She was to use these secrets to help the cats of the Valley. As the sun rose in this strange forest, Moon Stare bid her farewell, fading back into the trees. And then she woke up.
“I’m sorry I left you, but I am so much more now than I was when I left. I’m here to help us, all of us. I am Mothwatcher, Keeper of the Secrets.”
