Prompt;
I walked towards the playpen in curiosity. There was no one else particularly at the playpen, but there were onlookers watching the seemingly bored pups from their chairs as they sipped their drinks and nibbled on their chosen confectionaries. Upon glancing at the registry in passing, it seems a lot of people had signed up for most of the pups already... there seemed to be quite a lot of people who were particularly interested in a female pup with a darker coat than the others... and, as I stepped up to the side of the playpen, I could see several reasons why.
She seemed to have a beautiful coat with gorgeous blue eyes to match. I think anyone would feel blessed to have such a beautiful creature at their side. And, with all the muscle I could see already prominently making itself known as the pup shifted against her playpen mates' bodies, one could be pretty certain that this pup could, and would, be able to perform well with heavy-lifting tasks or with situations that require a strong defense.
The pup, upon hearing my arrival, perked up and looked directly at me. It was almost like she was studying me; trying to figure out if I was trustworthy enough to approach. I could feel an uncontrollable shiver run down my back as she stared directly into my eyes. I read somewhere that you're really not supposed to do that because it can make it seem like you're challenging them... however, I couldn't bring myself to look away.
Meanwhile, one of her playpen mates, upon feeling the darker pup suddenly move her head to look towards me as they laid against her body, opened their eyes as if just waking up from a nap and let out a big yawn.
The darker pup relented her stare to look at the brown pup, which, upon a quick glance at the registry, seemed to be a male. The brown pup blinked his eyes a couple of times and clicked his tongue against his palette, making a sound similar to when someone smacks their lips. He then looked up at the darker pup, almost as if he was confused as to why she moved. The darker pup responded in a sound that sounded somewhere between a sneeze and a 'chuff' and rolled her eyes as she moved her head to look out the cafe windows. As the brown pup turned his head back towards his original napping position, he seemed to have spotted me and, as if an alarm had suddenly gone off in the room, he suddenly stood up in clear excitement and bounded towards me.
A bit startled, I laughed as he nuzzled my hand that was near the fence and jumped up onto the fence as if to try and get to me. The Storekeeper briefly made a noise of discouragement and the pup immediately got all four of his paws back on the ground, opting to rub up against the fence as hard as he could as if he could melt through the fence if he tried hard enough. As I reached down to pet the pup, he arched into my hand, as if he were a cat demanding to be touched at all times. It was almost as if he was petting me as he rubbed himself against my hand as if he'd been starved from attention all his life.
Meanwhile, the darker pup was seemingly rolling her eyes even harder and I could see a third form, that had been previously hidden behind the other two, slowly rising from their place of slumber.
Upon seeing my attention had been diverted to this third form, the brown pup made his way over to this white form and nudged against their face. His nudges were excited, yet also gentle, as if he knew that if he nudged any harder than that, it would mean he was being too rowdy. I took another quick glance over at the registry. This one seemed to be another male. I glanced back just in time for this white pup with ruby-red eyes to look directly at me.
When this pup looked at me, the darker one looked at the ground and the brown one backed up, as if to respect his space. This one seemed to clearly be the current leader of the playpen.
The white pup shook his head as if to force himself awake and stretched out his body as he stood up. Then, similarly to when the darker pup saw me, he stared at me... however, it didn't feel like an analyzing stare. This stare felt more gentle. It was more like he was gauging my current emotions, which, I admit, I was nervous, but I also didn't have any intentions of walking away at the moment. Then, after staring at me for a few seconds, he approached me with a grace that I could only dream of possessing and gave a gentle nuzzle to my hand, as if reassuring me that he wasn't going to hurt me. In response, I felt an emotion similar to the feeling of wanting to cry and I could not even begin to explain why. It felt like this pup had such an overwhelmingly protective presence, that I couldn't help but to want to instantly reveal my weaknesses to him, despite having only just met him.
The darker pup and brown pup in the background seemed to both be neutral in his presence, almost like they were feeling the same emotions I was feeling.
The sound of the Storekeeper clearing their throat jerked us out of the moment, which the Storekeeper then followed up with an apology and a question of whether I wanted to order something from the cafe. I looked back at the pups, but they were already making their way back into a pile, as if understanding that it was time for me to go.
"One sec," I responded to the Storekeeper as I made my way over to the registry and signed myself the heck up. These pups intrigued me greatly and they seemed to be pretty adequately house-trained... or at least people-trained... so, why not offer, if not all of them, then at least one of them, a home? It seemed like such a waste of an opportunity to get a nice companion otherwise.
