Earl Grey was born to a outside house cat. The owners of the cat hadn't even known she was pregnant or had had kittens until the woman of the house went into their shed and found a litter of mewling kittens. They couldn't afford to sustain five cats, as it was a litter of four, but they'd done some research and knew they couldn't just separate them. Instead, they waiting until the kittens were weaned and old enough to survive on their own and then brought them to a shelter to be taken care of and hopefully given a new home.
Earl Grey and his siblings were separated at the shelter most of the time by metal cages, and he was scared of the many strange smells of the place. Sometimes groups of the animals would be let out to stretch their legs but rarely did he know any of the cats he was with. The shelter had a rotating playtime schedule. He was fed regularly and bathed and stuck with strange objects that the people said were good for him. It was overall an, if not comfortable, easy time.
However, his time there was made quite lonely watching all of the people walk in, looking at the animals, and then leaving with someone else. Several kids even laughed at him, calling him weird.
Then one day, Earl woke up to his cage being opened by a worker with an unfamiliar woman behind them. The woman smiled at him and stretched her hand out for him to smell, which he did with caution. She smelled nice, of strong but comforting warm spices and something sweet. He headbutted her hand in approval and purred. She smiled wider and told the worker. "This one, I'm certain."
Earl was taken from the cage to a carrier and the woman took him out to her vehicle. She talked as she drove, introducing herself as Kwa and saying something about cats that he didn't really understand. When the vehicle stopped, Kwa took his carrier out, placed it inside a building, and opened the door. Food was already set out, toy placed around, and strange colorful tables and chairs evenly spaced. The walls were soft pastels with paws prints scattered across.
The woman waved her arms in a grandiose gesture at the space and spoke.
"Welcome to Kwa's Paw Cafe, your new home!"
