Prompt:It was a beautiful overcast green-leaf day, the wind howled and the trees swayed in the breeze. The sky was silver and the fluffy clouds had the appearance of smoke.
The strong wind buffeted hawkpaw's fur as he leapt out of the den onto the cold dirt below him. Today he was learning how to hunt, of course only after he had clean out the elders den.
He went out near the river to find some soft moss to use for bedding. He dried out the moss by soaking the moisture with cobwebs. He quickly dashed back to camp with his mouth full of bedding. He quickly swapped out the bedding of the elders, doing multiple trips from and back to camp.
He waited at the entrance for his mentor to wake up, however it seemed that no cat was going to stir for a while. He decided to leave camp and to try and hunt on his own.
He dashed out of the ravine and went to hunt in the dense forest. The birds sang their morning melodies and the forest seemed to be teeming with life. He heard some scurrying nearby, his ears perked high, he silently crept forward towards the mouth watering prey. He finally prowled close enough, he wriggled and his claws unshethed, ready to make the kill. He leapt through the air and with his mighty paws, he missed. He had overjudged his pounce. Alerted, the prey scurried away.
It started raining heavily as he walked back to camp, the droplets pelting his fur. He was shocked, no cats were awake and the elders went back to sleep. The ravine was flooding! He yowled at the top of his lungs, "Flood! Wake up, there's a flood!" Suddenly, heads popped out of the dens, warriors quickly leaping down to get the elders, queens and kits, who were stuck on the lower levels of the dens.
One by one, they were evacuated, except for one kit. The waters were rising and with the other warriors occupied with getting the other cats to saftey. He sprung down the ravine, crashing with the onset of water. He had to get there in time, the kit was in the apprentice den, slightly higher up from the nursery. The water had already claimed the dens below. He climbed up, his paws hitting rock and dirt as he pulled himself up to the den. The kit mewed, and shivered, terrified of the raging water below.
Hawkpaw used most of his strength to get to the kit, he picked the little kit up gently with his mouth, and started to ascend up the ravine. He struggled but as he got closer to the top, other cats gave him a helping paw. They pulled him up and the kit to safety.
"Thank you hawkpaw for saving my kit!" She happily thanked the apprentice. The clan was praising him for saving the mischievous kit and for alerting the clan to the rising flood.
