Generally, birds have wings with three layers of feathers-
A top layer, highlighted in red, that is more solid-looking because all of it's feathers are short and it's where the actual bones are.
A second sort of mid-layer, highlighted in purple, only visible from the inside of the wing, where the feathers are a bit longer.
A third layer, highlighted in blue, where the feathers are the longest and able to move more freely.
When birds fold their wings in, only the first and third layers of feathers are visible. They hold the wing tight to their body and the feathers sort of stack onto each other.
I'm really bad at explaining things in words - My best suggestion is using google for reference!
Hope this helps!
