The seaside town had gathered for a meeting, many of the residents confused and upset. One by one they stepped up to tell their stories. One woman was rescued from drowning, placed upon the rocks to dry and kept company until aid could arrive. Another man had been dragged into the depths, never to be found again. One complained that the fish were scared, hiding from the terrible monster in their seas. How could they let something like that reside here? They must hunt it! Kill it!
The woman fought, hard, to explain that perhaps it was not a vile sea creature. The others fought just as hard to say that it was a killer, a monster to be dealt with. Only one voice was silent, watching the procession bicker back and forth. "What if I am both?" The voice finally said, and they all turned to find a strange finned keldine in their midst.
"I mean, what if I am good AND bad? Rarely is anything ever one or the other. Did I save her life? Yes! Why? Because I felt like it. Not to mention she asked nicely. But you lot seem determined to see me as a monster..." He sighed dramatically. "A dozen years and nothing has changed with you people. Very well! I reckon Ill just have to try again in another dozen! Oh, and... you all might want to seek refuge." He offered his paw to the lady he rescued, a bubble forming around them both, as a torrent of water began to engulf the town.
Maybe they would survive.
Maybe they wouldn't.
He'd find out in a decade or so.
As for the lady? Well, he showed her the way to the waters and his home, a town under the sea. She learned the language of the waters, how to breathe, how to see, and what her new companion was like. Fickle like the waves, yet full of life! He would dance with the fish, hunt with the sharks, and sing with the whales! Oh the songs he knew! (And some of them never to be repeated oh my!) His wrath was terrible and passionate, but then nothing was ever halfway done with him.
"Ooooh why do it halfway thats only half the fun!
Why be a musty creature, that only sees the sun?
Come with me and play,
We'll have a wonderful day!
Come all the way and watch the world come undoooone!"
He taught her how to ride sea lions, catch fish with her teeth, make angels in the sand. How to make coral jewelry, but also weapons. She made him a coral pair of antlers, which became his new favorite thing. He learned to laugh, to live freely, and for a time, the decade was forgotten. Two decades had passed since he had visited that town, and his love for his partner had only grown. There were stories of the pair dancing in the moonlit waters, waters that had been far calmer with her presence. She had changed, become a creature of the depths.
It was her bad luck that one day, a sailor had seen her face. Someone she knew, from that old town meeting. They had reeled in terror, calling her a monster! Lashing out with a knife, which struck and took her eye. Her other cried, not understanding... but Chesire knew. He understood. And in seconds the joyful, peaceful waters became a raging whirlpool. Over time her heart mended, but never her eye.
The waters could be petty, too. From that day forward, no sailor ventured into those waters, knowing if they did their own eye would be taken as well. An eye for an eye, literally. If they wanted a monster so bad? He'd give them one to fear.
