I hate the medicine cat code
and Imma change it for the series I've been drawing (Yknow, Cloudbuff and things)
So I'm thinking that it is still considered bad to have kits, since you will have to worry about too much
But I'm going to make is possible to have mates. But, at a cost. A medicine cat can take a mate, but they have to swear an oath.
I, (Insert name), promise to dedicate my priorities to medicine. I will not have biases, or
choose my mate over my clan's health. I won't deny a cat good health if they have wronged
my mate or myself, and I will not have kits as to not sway my decisions. I hope Starclan
see's and approves of my choice, and if I break this oath I will be exiled into distant lands.

This is why most medicine cats still don't have mates, because they're too afraid to break the oath. And if it's too harsh suck it up this is warrior cats harsh is its LEGACY
Also, do you guys have any ideas for the medicine cat code? Tell me I want to know so I can feel bad about this one lol

I think you should have it that a medicine cat can take a mate and have kits once they've trained an apprentice.

The big thing I have with the code as it is in canon??? is actually the no-mate-or-kits rule aaah

When you take into account that it was devised by Moth Flight- who, according to her SE book, was at the time
a) recently widowed
b) a first-time mom
c) trying to found the medicine cat order

no WONDER she felt like balancing her family with her medcat duties was too much! She was a single parent still trying to process her grief from her mate's death AND found a whole order of healers/constantly travel around to visit/converse with the other prospective healers. That is a lot for any one cat. She had no mate to help with the kids and support her in her duties, and no apprentice/other medicine cat to help shoulder the responsibility to her own clanmates. Not to mention that the other clans were all looking to her for direction to a certain extent as well. She was very young at the time and just- the fact that she in her highly abnormal circumstance laid that down as a concrete rule for all future generations is. hhh

So my thoughts on it are like?? In current days no medicine cat would face circumstances like that, you know? The order has been well-founded for generations, and clans frequently have more than one medicine cat- or at least other cats who have vague herb knowledge (*cough*ThunderClan and its massive contingent of helpers), so a medicine cat having a mate and kids wouldn't be like an. 'oH NO we have NOBODY to turn to bc our doctor had BABIES' kinda situation or anything haha

So on one hand. I get the 'not showing bias/having distractions' thing but also like. If you have another fully-trained medicine cat in the Clan??? Why shouldn't a medcat be able to live a normal life jghfdsjg. Like. Us humans don't require doctors to be single and childless to do their jobs, you know? Maybe a bad parallel but hhh this rule has always bugged me and been the source of so much ~drama~ in the books that I kinda wish it was gone oops

I do think that swearing an oath to be unbiased would be an important component- something about valuing the lives of all cats, no matter what one's personal attachment (or lack thereof) may be, OR what Clan they belong to.

"harsh is its LEGACY" dfjsagdh you are right about that, my guy. I do like the phrasing of the oath you have there though- underlining the importance of being fair in giving of their care and all.

but honestly the only thing that confuses me abt the med cat code (besides the "having a mate" thing, ofc) saying they cant have kits bc they'll probably prioritize them over their clanmates.... wont the med cats be likely to do the same thing for their parents and/or siblings ? ? ?
