In the distant past, the Dragons of Aurelius lived unordered and in fear of creatures known as Ick; small black beings that feed off of the negative emotions of dragons. When the King of Despair rose up to end the world of Aurelius as they knew it, a young prodigy calling themselves Hawthorne harnessed the power of light and banished him to the Sea of Solitude for all of time. Now, the Dragons of Aurelius live in peaceful communities with one another, protected by mages who wield the magic of the sun in order to keep the Ick at bay.
The world of Aurelius is made up of several massive items that float thousands of meters above an endless sea. A vast network of caves and tunnels lie beneath the surface of the islands, where dragons are able to mine precious metals and other materials. Dragons have a sophisticated sense of society, with even small advancements in technology. However, magic makes most technological devices obsolete, and remains the most convenient way for dragons to conduct their daily activities.
Young dragons with an affinity for light magic are often sent to a magical school for gifted hatchlings, to be trained under Hawthorne as mages to fight the Ick. Upon graduation, some mages take up positions as public servants for surface populations. Others may be hired to patrol the cave systems as protection against the more concentrated infections that dwell within the tunnels. Some may even take up regular jobs, and occasionally hunt Ick by taking quests listed on Job Boards throughout Aurelius's many cities.
