Emmett used to feel privileged to be able to accompany his mother into their family's circus ring.
But as he grew, and became interested in different hobbies, what felt like a party slowly and painfully bled into a burden.
When Highschool rolled around, suddenly and with a brutal force, Emmett was left trying to figure out who he was.
All of his newfound friends loved that he performed, but he was very quickly realizing that being in the show ring
wasn't what he wanted anymore. Jack and Kiro played hockey, Zura was a competitive wrestler, and Bobby-
his best friend, and one of the coolest people in his eyes -Bobbi. He was a skater. Emmett only had to watch
the keldine fly down the road and do a North Ollie as he grinned up at the fawning crowd that waited for him to
completely forget about the pale nose and frill collar that was waiting for him in his backpack. Emmett and Bobbi
were fast friends, and Em was a fast learner on the board. Taking his measly allowance from the circus, the ambitious
keldine bought himself a custom skateboard with blue, red and yellow swirls and a giant smiley face. When he brought
it home, it was no big deal, but during a very quiet and awkward dinner Emmett finally blurted that he wanted to stop
being a clown for a little while. His parents and sister had all stared at him for a while, since no one had ever quit
before. His father had refused and told him if he didn't figure himself out he'd pull him out of the school and he'd be
tutored alongside his sister.
Saturday, with his skateboard in tow, Emmett was at the main tent with his mother practicing their routine.
He had snuck out early to meet Bobbi and practice some new tricks with him. He covered up the scrapes and
bruises with appropriately covered bandaids, hoping no one would notice.
Watching her ride the elegant white arabian painted with his mother's pastel colors, Emmett couldn't help but admire her.
With a soft sigh, and holding back the choking knot in his throat, the young keldine gripped his board in his
paws and approached her, knowing she'd understand. "I really don't want to be in the circus anymore-
I want to skate- with Bobbi, and my friends. I want a life! I'm tired of getting weird looks and people giggling at me
when you pick me up. This was fun when I was kid, but now I just want to figure out who I am and what I really
like to do. Please-"
"Enough!" the ringmaster, who was also known as 'dad', bellowed from behind him.
Emmett whirled around with his ears pushed flat against his head, whimpering as his board
was pried from his embrace and tossed to the side, a soft crack filling the silence. His heart splintered, and
he let the pent up sadness wash out in a few tears.
"You're a clown, son. This is your life. It's all of ours. You can't just slip away from this so easily."
Emmett dropped his head, defeated.
'I'm just a clown'
