How did they meet?: Birds. Adorable, delicate, flighty. That's what many seem to think, observing song birds from a distance. They don't see the other types of birds.
The smart and the wicked.
Greysi met the first kind when she saw a lion playing with it, unlike other creatures who gave up or fought foolishly this bird tried different tactics. It tried distraction, playing dead, attack but the teen just laughed and batted it around again. When it looked at Greysi its beady eyes seemed nothing like the songbirds, they held intelligence and pleaded with Greysi for help. A chord struck in her heart, one she had thought was long since buried. She took the bird and fed it while it healed. She was shocked the first time the bird did its best approximation of a purr.
However, as soon as it could fly Greysi shunned the bird. She didn't even give it a name. She wouldn't get attached. Not again. Day after day she plodded through life. Ignoring again the pleas of others as best she could.
Eventually she couldn't stand it any longer. The songbirds mocked her with their cheery notes while down below her pride leader was a tyrant. He ruled with cruelty and as much as Greysi hardened her heart eventually it had to crack.
Without hesitation she strode up to him, sitting there on his throne of bones. He feasted, as he always did, with skinny servants bowing under the weight of the delicacies he demanded.
She challenged him, a plate clattered in the silence. He simply grinned and whistled. A great creature, on silent wings approached. It was no songbird though. Heading its masters call it flew straight at Greysi. She flinched, tried to bring her paws and claws up to fight. The thing they don't tell you about birds though is that they can be vicious. They target the eyes, the belly and when they get their beaks onto you they shake and tear like a cruel terrier.
Greysi could do nothing as the bird tore into her ear and scratched her face. The king's hawk was far more maneuverable than any land dweller could hope to be and not daring to open her eyes Greysi was at its mercy. Until there was another screech, a roar, a scuffle and Greysi dared to open her eyes. The grey parrot she had rescued weeks ago had returned and was diving the hawk. Knowing the parrot couldn't hold them off for long she pounced, and threw the hawk back at its fat master. His maw was wide in shock, beady eyes filled with anger.
They say dogs reflect their owners, perhaps the same could be said for birds. Either way, as Greysi and her companion fled the scene she couldn't help but grin. She had saved the bird, but in return, the bird had saved her too, literally and from her own cold heart. She finally gave the bird a name, Ramona, meaning wise saviour, it couldn't fit better.
