Prompt;; “Momma when will brother open his eyes.” Alderkit could hear cats talking around him, but he was unsure who they were or who they were talking about.
“Soon little Pinekit. He is taking his own time.” Alderkit heard another voice, but decided to curl back up and fall back asleep, they could wait.
-----------
After awhile Alderkit decided to finally open his eyes, he wanted to see the people who kept waking him up. When his eyes opened he was greeted by the sight of a large belly, looking up he realised it was his mother.
“It’s about time you opened your eyes.” Someone spoke from Alderkit’s right side. He looked over to see his brother Pinekit curled up next to their mother’s belly.
“Well hello my little lovely.” Alderkit’s mother, Rainyarrow, cooed.
Alderkit was happy that he had decided to open his eyes.
-----------
Alderkit had been hearing it since he first left the nursery. Alderkit knew his mother tried her best to shield her kits from the comments, but that didn’t mean they never caught the tail end of things, especially when cats said things along the line of. “They don’t belong in this clan, kits like that should not be around us normal clan cats, and those kits will bring suffering to the clan just like their father.”
Alderkit and Pinekit did their best to ignore it and continue to play like normal kits, but they could never quite escape it.
-----------
“You’re it!” Pinekit hollered while running away from his brother.
“Wait! I’m not ready!” Alderkit called back while tumbling over his feet to catch the other tom. Alderkit fell on his face while trying to run out of the nursery.
Pinekit giggled while running in the opposite direction. “Alderkit can’t catch me!”
“Who let them leave, they should stay in the nursery.” Alderkit heard one of the nearby cats whisper about him and his brother, bringing down his spirit. Alderkit glared at the elder who had said the offending words, she would learn her lesson one day.
-----------
“Momma,” Pinekit spoke trying to catch his mother’s attention. “Why does everyone talk about us?”
Rainyarrow looked down at her kit, trying her best to deny her kit’s words. “They don’t talk about you.”
“Yes they do. We hear them all of the time.” Alderkit spoke up.
“I’m sorry my sweet babies.” Rainyarrow solemnly spoke, the two had never seen their mother look so sad before. “I am sorry I did this to you guys before. Your father is a rogue.”
“He was my mate long before becoming a rogue, but I after I told him we were having kits he began to do some bad things in the clan, claiming it was the best for us. He was a power hungry and wanted to take over the clan. His plans were stopped when Bagderstar realized what he was doing and he was exiled from the clan.”
When Alderkit’s mother told him this he understood why the clan thought he would hurt them, but he vowed to show them just how great of a warrior he could become. He would make up for his father’s mistakes and protect the clan with his last breath.
-----------
Alderkit sat at the bottom of the bank looking up at Badgerstar as the tom walked down to meet him at the bottom.
“Alderkit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Alderpaw. Your mentor will be Jaymask. I hope Jaymask will pass down all she knows on to you.” Badgerstar spoke out to the rest of the clan as Jaymask walked up to the two cats.
Alderkit could not wait to start his training to become the best warrior he could be.
------------
“Why would Badgerstar ever make an apprentice from a like him?”
“Badgerstar might as well start letting rogues become Mudclan apprentices.”
Alderpaw looked down at his meal, suddenly less hungry as he listened to the rest of his clan while they shared tongues.
“Ignore them.” Jaymask said as she sat down next to her apprentice. “Cats like to talk about things that don’t affect them to help forget their own problems.”
Alderpaw looked up at his mentor, she was normally cold and distant with him, but never rude.
“I never did anything wrong to them, so why do they see me as the bad guy?” Alderpaw asked him mentor, almost desperate for and answer.
“They want someone to blame and sadly you’re the closests they can get.” Jaymask frowned while looking at her apprentice.
The two sat in silence for a second, Alderpaw thinking about what Jaymask had said.
“I guess you’re right.” Alderpaw spoke out loud. “Well, I’ll show them just how great I can be. I’ll be the best warrior there ever was!”
Alderpaw knew he would never be like his father.
-----------
The tension between Alderpaw and the clan did not change much. It really brought down Alderpaw’s spirits, he felt like he could never win. No matter how much prey he brought back, no matter how much he helped the cats, no matter how well he did on patrols the clan still didn’t accept him as one of them. So that night he snuck out of the camp to talk with Starclan. He needed a sign as to whether or not he should stay with the clan, or if he belonged somewhere else.
Alderpaw made his way out of the dens and into the clearing, before sitting down and looking up at the clear night sky. “Oh Starclan what do I need to do to prove myself?”
Alderpaw thought of leaving the clan, they clearly did not want him here, so why should he stay? Alderpaw pondered that thought for a long while. As he sat in the field he thought of the clan and his family. If Alderpaw left he would leave all of the pressure to succeed on his brother’s shoulders. Sighing Alderpaw stood, getting ready to go back to the camp when he noticed something moving in the bushes near the clan dens. Alderpaw got closer, only to realize that there was an alligator in the bush.
Alderpaw ran towards the camp “Alligator! There’s an alligator coming towards the camp!”
Alderpaw was yelling at the top of his lungs trying to wake his clan. The clan could hear Alderpaw’s frantic calls and woke from their slumber. As Alderpaw entered the Leader’s Line warriors were being sent out to deal with the threat of the alligator. Jaymask instantly ran over to her apprentice, followed closely by his family, to make sure Alderpaw was okay.
Alderpaw had saved the clan that day, from that day forward the clan decided that cats would watch over the camp at night to make sure nothing like this would happen again.
-----------
Slowly the clan started to accept Alderpaw and his brother. They began to understand that they were not like their father, that the two were different from their father. From that point on the apprentices were treated like cats and not like villains.
-----------
Alderpaw crouched down, watching the mink sit on a tree trunk. It was his training assessment and he was determined to pass it. Alderpaw watched closely, making sure the mink couldn’t smell him. Alderpaw was right next to the stump when he leaped. He caught the mink as he leaped over the stump and landed gracefully on the other side.
Alderpaw kept on his way, catching prey as he went along. When Alderpaw found it sufficient enough he brought the freshkill back to the camp. With him he brought two minks and two frogs.
When Alderpaw entered the camp he found the clan waiting for his return, they happily greeted him, excited my his freshkill. Badgerstar and Jaymask entered the camp soon after and congratulated the tom on his job well done.
Later that day Badgerstar called a clan meeting.
“I, Badgerstar, leader of Mudclan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them to you as a warrior in their turn.” Badgerstar began after start the clan meeting.
“Alderpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?” Badgerstar looked down at Alderpaw.
“I do!” Alderpaw cheered happily.
“Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Alderpaw, from this moment on you will be known as Aldertuft. StarClan honors your persistence, and we welcome you as a full warrior of Musclan.” Badgerstar looked down at Aldertuft happily.
Badgerstar had always believed in the tom from the beginning, he never believed in judging a cat by their parents, but he could not always convince the clan of the. Aldertuft had though, Aldertuft had shown the clan he was not like his father. He showed Mudclan that every cat chooses their own path and he would always choose the path that would guide him and his clan in the proper direction.
