prompt:
" I've always known that I wasn't where I was meant to be
The ether calls my name, still I'm anchored here at sea
I watch the stars above as they dance and linger in the sky
Though I know I am wingless I have always longed to fly "
' I want to be free '
From the moment she was brought into the world, Maiagaru could tell she was different. She didn't like the way most Selkoi had their eyes glued onto her when she passed by, it wasn't like she was the only one with a uniqueness to her. And yet, they couldn't help but stare. Other Selkoi would treat her as if she were a beauty to behold, or as someone who didn't belong- and she despised it. Maia would weep into the sea, asking why she had been born the way she was. Asking the gods if she was cursed to be trapped in a body she loathed so deeply. She didn't belong in this body- she wanted to rip it apart and free her soul of this cage. But she was afraid. All she could do was wish and hope, which wasn't really any good.
' Like the bluebirds flying by me '
That was where she belonged. And she wanted so badly to soar and be free of the ground. But her body was too heavy to allow it. Maia felt powerless, often wandering off in solitude and not wanting to be seen. Many were worried about her, especially her family and the few friends she allowed herself to make. They'd see her watching the birds as they took off into the ether, a longing in her eyes that she knew no one else could understand. If only they could comprehend her dreams of journeying across the universe, they too would stop at nothing.
' Like the waves out on the blue sea '
One day, she fell into the waves for the very first time- wandered too close to the edge of a cliff above the seaside. She'd never gotten accustomed to swimming, only ever having practices at the smaller lakes on the island, as she wasn't of the age that she would be allowed to explore the open sea on her own. Many young Selkoi were reprimanded and scolded, as it wasn't uncommon for their sense of adventure to kick in in their adolescence, but Maia's was different- as if it wasn't obvious enough, she wanted to explore the uncharted up above rather than underneath the water. And yet, she was tossed into the ocean as if by fate, telling her that it might not be so bad after all.
' If your love has to tie me '
Beneath the waves, she felt weightless. It had never been like this before- when she practiced in the bodies of water on the island. Perhaps she'd never given it a chance. But now ? At that very moment, Maia felt like she was flying. Though, of course, she wasn't. The water held her up with ease as if she had no mass. Confused and awestricken, Maia moved her limbs, propelling herself forward. It was rather frightening to be in the sea alone, especially on her first time, but it also felt liberating ? She was truly confused, as she didn't think it would feel the way it did. And yet, she felt at peace. Perhaps she could get used to it.
' Don't try me, say good-bye '
Now, Maiagaru is grown and has become an explorer of the sea. If she could, she would still give what she could at the chance to fly, but she has been able to cope with what she had been given. She travels the vast ocean in search of wonders she herself doesn't know of exactly. Often times, she wouldn't know what she is looking for, but on her expeditions, she finds treasures of all sorts and discovers a plethora of new things: like how there are stars beneath the ocean or the fact that alien-like creatures can be found beneath the waves. Yes, Maia has learned to be satisfied with the life she leads now. She is happy to be given the chance to explore the vast and unknown, although not above the clouds, and therefore not exactly what she'd dreamed of.
' I want to be free '
Maia is glad she stood up and picked herself up when she did.
She is strong, and although flightless has learned to soar and be free.
