Malthaz is a creature that does not fit in with the rest of his species.. when he was younger, he ran with this to the fullest, using his mutations and strangeness to cause mayhem, for that was what he considered to be fun. Left because of his differences, he had no one to tell him that what he was doing was not just fun chaos, but some actual destruction, pushing him further and further away from those that already struggled to accept him. Male was only a child, though. He did not understand, did not connect his strangeness with the distance others kept from him. He tried to be good, and cause others to pay attention to him... in the worst way he could’ve done so, acting out. After all, even the attention from being reprimanded was better then complete isolation... wasn’t it?
It took a long time for him to finally understand that the herd was hardly one that he could be a part of, for they did not want him. Just as he realized this though, and began to accept it after fierce bouts of rage and denial of the injustice of the situation... things changed again. The herd was being hunted, and Mal was the one to step forward and protect the rest of them. As quickly as it happened, the rest of them changed their minds about Mal, encouraging him to stay rather than subtly telling him to leave. Yet even as everything changed, nothing did. Still none went out of their way to speak with him, be close to him. They only wanted him as a tool to protect themselves... yet, for the first time he can remember, someone did want him, even if only for the selfish reason of protection, and Mal couldn’t help but to cling to that feeling for a time. Now, though, he truly knows that these people are not his anymore than he is theirs.Yet, he balks at being alone. So Mal stays, the lonely protector, part and yet not of the herd. He is an ember, drifted away from the fire that is the herd, close enough to see the warmth and comfort of the lit kindling, but much too far to feel it. He only hopes that one day he might be brave enough to let the wind take him- to start a fire- a herd- of his own.
