"In olden times, Sapphires were reserved for only the bravest of steeds, the most valiant of warhorses to ever grace the battlefield....."

Nestled securely in the Ötztal Alps and under the watchful gaze of the Wildspitze, laid a small kingdom called the Ruhiger Wald, or "The Serene Forest". This was once a land that was said to be protected by unicorns, where magic and fantasy could not only survive, but thrive. While it was it's own country, it was a closely kept secret, and even the king's most trusted knights were not permitted to go out into the forests, for fear of disturbing their guardian beasts. Since those medieval times of olde, the stories have been proven, disproven, and laid to rest; Ruwald, as it was often shortened, was eventually assimilated into Austria, but with the Presiden't permission, was able to keep control of its prized forest, dictating who could and could not enter its lush grounds. In modern day, the Royal Family continues to keep watch over the forest and all of it's mysteries, and the newest Princess, a young girl by the name of Alexandra. Like her father before her, she held a deep love for the forests that surrounded their estate and the horses they raised in them; in particular, the king raised Stormwardens, Nordanners, and a small breed of Welsh pony known as Ferox. Though smaller and more limited in their abilities compared to their larger companions, they were by far the family's favorite and most prized possessions.

Ruhm was born to a long line of bright-coated Ferox, and quickly became the Princess' favorite, even before she was allowed to ride on her own. He was subjected to extensive training, desensitizing, and schooling so that he would be the safest mount possible for Alexandra, but what the Royal family nor the stables' trainers counted on was just how intensely the two would bond to each other. From the moment Alexandra first sat in his saddle as a five year old, he was utterly and completely enamored with her, and the duo became inseparable. She even began competing with the Ferox, much to her parents' pride, and they did nothing but excel.

One night, Ruhm hadn't been feeling well after a competition, so Alexandra had snuck out to sleep in his stall with him. They'd curled up together in the soft hay, and slept soundly until a soft crackling noise stirred Ruhm. The smell of smoke quickly followed, and the stallion's eyes shot awake. He could hear the other horses starting to panic and he leapt to his hooves, quickly nudging his princess awake. Above them, fire crept along the rafters and shingles like a deadly disease, consuming everything in its path. Ruhm's heart was racing in his chest, and without stopping to think, he turned and began to kick the stall door violently, splintering the wood as he forced it open from the inside. He could hear stablehands shouting in the distance, but ignored them; they wouldn't make it in time. The stallion panicked even more when he realized Alexandra still had not stirred; he had to get her out of this smoke. Using the barn's wall and his body, he managed to shimmy her up onto his back, and he stood back up as carefully as possible. Ruhm felt her arms instinctively wrap around his neck and he breathed an equine sigh of relief; good, she was at least still alive. In a frenzy he bolted out of his stall, just in time for the barn doors to open; the Ferox barreled through them, nearly running over a stablehand in the process, and disappeared into the shadows of the forest.

Ruhm wasn't sure how long he'd ran, but by the time his mind had cleared and panic subsided, the sun was starting to stain the sky in fire. He came to rest by a stream, chest heaving as he tried to collect his bearings. Where were they? In his headlong sprint away from the burning barn, he'd neglected to take notice of the direction he'd taken them, and now he hated to admit that he was lost. It was a stupid mistake on his part. On his back he felt the princess stir, releasing his neck and sitting upright. He was thankful for small miracles, Alexandra not falling off especially. He turned and watched as she rubbed her eyes and stretched before realization hit her; she heard birds instead of horses, and sunlight instead of the cool shade of the barn. "Ruhm, where are we?" She stopped and sniffed hr nightgown. "And why do I smell like smoke?" If only I could tell you, he thought to himself, and stepped forward to drink from the cool stream. Alexandra hopped off of his back to wash her face, somehow hoping the cold water would make her wake up from this strange dream, but she wasn't that lucky. Even only being eight, she knew she was in a lot of potential danger, and she whimpered. Ruhm was at her side instantly, nudging her and comforting her. He'd find their way back. After a brief rest, Alexandra vaulted back up onto Ruhm's back and they set off. He seemed to remember passing these trees before reaching the stream, so this seemed like a good place to start.

Horse and rider traveled all through the day and well into the evening, Ruhm desperately trying to find something that looked familiar, or even catch a whiff of his own scent, which was much easier said than done. Progress had been infuriatingly slow, and he was even more distraught when they came back to the same stream they'd stopped at earlier that morning. Now it was getting dark, and they were forced to hunker down for the night; with wolves slowly expanding their territories into Austria, it was too dangerous to travel at night with no weapons and no light. They started again the next morning, and Ruhm was obsessive about marking where they'd been, making sure his back was always towards the stream, but in the end, they appeared right back where they started. He wanted to kick a tree, but the stallion knew that would scare Alexandra, and she was already tired and hungry. He snorted, watching the last rays of light disappear behind the mountain when something caught his attention; across the stream there was a tiny orb, like a firefly, glowing against the shadows of the forest. It was so bright, just hovering there steadily, and it seems Alexandra saw it, too. The stallion began to approach it, extending his nose curiously, but it began to move away from him, deeper into the forest. His subconscious told him to follow it, so with his princess safely on his back, he did. He picked his way carefully through the brush and forest roots, always keeping just a few feet behind the light that seemed to guide them. His cyan eyes stared straight ahead, but his ears constantly swiveled and searched for the sound of approaching danger. In the back of his mind he knew he should be more wary, but this light was so comforting; it filled him with a sense of peace.

It must have been close to midnight when the light began to fade away quickly, as if hiding. Ruhm panicked briefly, wondering where the light went when his ears caught a rustle in the leaves. Quickly the stallion turned, ears pricked as far forward as they could go, and in the deepest part of the shadows he could just barely make out a canine shape stalking towards them. Without a second thought, he bolted. With the pack of five right on his heels, Ruhm did his best to navigate the forest, but luck was not on his side; suddenly a root caught his leg and he stumbled, throwing Alexandra from his back and making him hit the ground hard. Ignoring the pain in his ankle he scrambled up, leaping towards his princess to stand over her protectively, ears pinned and head low against the circling wolves. One tried to leap on him from behind, but a well-placed kick sent that one retreating back to his friends. He wasn't sure how he was going to get them out of this one, but Ruhm knew that he'd go down fighting if he had to. They weren't getting his princess, and he gave an aggressive squeal and nipped at one to prove that point.

Suddenly there came shouting behind them, and three mounted men tore through the forest, firing a rifle into the air. The wolves spooked and quit their chase, running off into the night. Their flashlights shone straight into Ruhm's eyes and he snorted, ears still pinned. "Whoa, whoa Ruhm it's okay, it's us. Guys, we found them!" As his eyes adjusted, he could see the Royal Guard uniforms, and three familiar Nordanners staring down at him. The Ferox began to relax, gently nudging Alexandra up. One of the Guards pulled her up onto his Nordanner, and Ruhm followed obediently as they made their way out of the forest and onto a familiar trail; the light had actually been guiding them home, and if not for the wolves, they would have made it to the basin riding trail. He would've found his way. Turning back, he could see the little orb hovering at the edge of the forest, and he whickered a soft "thank you" before it faded back into the arms of the forest. The next morning after both Ferox and Princess had been cared for, cleaned up, and well-rested, Ruhm was pulled out of his stall early. Everything had been explained, from the barn fire set by a disgruntled stablehand, to Ruhm saving the princess and keeping her safe in the forest as they tried to find their way home. Ruhm had been preened and prepared all morning, though for what, he wasn't sure. He was never groomed like this, even for competition. They slipped on a bright golden bridle; also strange, as this was reserved for only the high tier Nordanners and Stormwardens. A Ferox had never worn a golden bridle....

As he was led out into the yard, he could see the entirety of the Royal Family dressed formally, and a golden collar brandished with blue beads and a huge sapphire in the king's hands. Wow, one of the horses was getting crowned today; briefly he wondered who before realization hit the young stallion. He stood in total shock all throughout the king's short speech, staring incredulously at the gorgeous piece of tack until it was placed gently around his neck. Ferox had been crowned before, but never in gold...

"Ishtar is always seeking a new thrill or challenge he can complete! He is very competitive, one day he came across a great challenge that had a prize he deeply desired. The prize to the winner was a golden neck piece along with a sharp blue stone that would be placed in the middle. Ishtar couldn't resist and went off to join this challenge and win it!
There were 14 challenges in total, each one tested the challenger's strengths and weaknesses. As for strengths in the challenge, Ishtar had to use his abilities to the best he could to overcome the current event before him. He passed the strengths portion with flying colors! However, the weaknesses part was a totally different story. Ishtar wasn't prepared to face things that were either a problem for him or difficult. He was hesitant to even continue forward, but he managed to make it through the challenges in the end. Though he did not pass the weaknesses part with flying colors, he did his best and he was very proud of himself for doing so!
Soon the challenge came to an end, among the several other competitors, Ishtar was chosen as the winner of the challenges! This confused him though, others around him had passed the same challenges as well. He went to speak with the one who held the competition and asked them. "Why was I the one who won? The others surely did better than I." and the competition holder replied to him. "That may be true they did. But you were the only one to complete the weaknesses challenges, though you were hesitant and unsure, you pulled through it and did your best. That is why you have been chosen!"
Ever since that day, Ishtar proudly wears his gold neck piece and stone everywhere he goes. It always reminds him that he can overcome anything in his way, no matter how big or small the issue may be!" <3
