First Halter
Training before moving to halter
I had I0028 brought over to my ranch after a couple of visits of getting to know her and
getting her used to me. I had let her settle in for a couple of days, but still visited her and
brought a variety of treats and snacks to her, each visit! I've spoke to her, and even hung
out in the pasture with her and just watch how she behaves. I've learned she seems to
have soft spots, and seems she wants to get to know me but just always so nervous. Each
day she seemed to move closer and closer to me, and I've been able to pet her more each
time I visit her. There have been couple times she nipped at me and bolted. But otherwise
she seems to be pretty social and sweet. The more I got to know the mare the more names
I had on mind. Finally I had decided that I will call her Kathryn, but Kathryn the Indian Pony
for Registered name.
She seems to have settled in so I've decided to give it a try on rounding her up. I decided to use
Duncan, as I wanted these two to get used to each other. I gathered Duncan and got him tacked
up. As usual he'll nip at the air or whip me as I tighten the cinch of his saddle. I mounted upon
Duncan and had a rope ready to capture Kathryn from the pasture and to bring her to the round
pen. I gave Duncan the signal to walk. We trotted on over to the pasture in which Kathryn was
pastured in.When we arrived to the gate Duncan was surprised to catch a scent he's smelled
before but not here. He squealed loudly, and in the distance you could see Kathryn stop and
raise her head to the noise. She trotted closer to the gate but stopped 20 feet away from the
gate. I popped the gate open as I signaled Duncan to move into the pasture, then shut the gate.
I lift the rope then give a toss and failed... Kathryn bolted after my first fail.
Training in the Round Pen (part 1)
After 3 fails and 15 minutes, I captured Kathryn. It took a bit of time to lead the mare
with the rope, but eventually she gave in and somewhat followed as we made it to the
round pen. I tossed the rope over her back as I opened the round pen gate to let her run.
After half a minute, she had helped herself to removing the loose rope. It took her a few
tries of pulling the rope in different places and she managed to pull in the right spot to slip
off the rope. She prances around then stops and realizes I was watching her. She snorted and
paced on the opposite side of the round pen that I was on. I left Duncan tied up to the post
outside the round pen. I grabbed the rope that Kathryn threw on the ground, and walked
towards her. I slowly moved the rope around and then increased my motions into swings.
I put pressure on her to make her run some laps around the pen. I had her run laps for a
couple of minutes, then stopped and turned away. Surprisingly, she unlike most, approached
me immediately after I had turned and started to walk away. I held my breath for a moment
in shock, and alert but then I remembered she has a very kind spirit. I stood for a moment
then slowly looked over at her. When I was able to read that she was comfortable, I moved
to face her. I lifted my hand and lightly placed it on her nose. While standing in place, she
did a tiny jump but quickly settled down and didn't freak out.
Training in the Round Pen (part 2)
I spoke to her softly to try and calm her. She let me pet her a few times, and when I
started to pet her forehead she snapped at me but luckily didn't actually bite me or
intend for it to actually reach me. I took her sign and released pressure and just pushed
her to run a few laps around the pen. After half a minute of running her around the pen,
I had stepped away to grab the halter and lead I planned using for her. I turn around with
the halter in my hands and Kathryn right in front of me. I held up the halter slowly in front
of Kathryn to allow her to check it out. She moved her nose towards the halter, then began
to feel it with her lips. A couple of times she tried to pick it up but then would spook from
it's movement. I lifted the halter and moved it towards her slowly. She backed up but then
turned her head towards the halter. She suddenly turned away and then began to run laps
around the round pen on her own. So I put pressure on her to change direction. I let her
run it out for half a minute then I turned away once again and walked to towards the gate.
This time when she followed I gave her some pets on her face, then slowly reached to stroke
her forehead. I was able to manage petting her on her forehead so I gave some nice scratches
and pets up and down her face for about half a minute before I started to stroke her on her
jaw, and closer to her ears. I gradually made it to the ears and her upper neck. Kathryn had
jumped back a couple of times but seemed to be more relaxed by the minute. After 5 minutes
had passed I stepped away to release all pressure to see if she'd still follow my draw.
First Halter - Part 1
I had practiced a few different things with Kathryn until she'd gotten used to things.
Then I gave her a half hour break before I continued helping her learn the halter is
no threat so that if I manage to get the halter onto the nervous mare, there was no
trouble. I entered the pen and Kathryn walked to the gate to greet me. I reached
out but then she snapped at the air and ran off nervous. I picked up the halter and
and lightly began to swing the lead around to put pressure on her to make her run
a few laps with a few turns before I turned away from Kathryn again. This time
when she had reached my side, I lifted the rope up towards her face when got too
close. I slowly turn around as I move the rope towards her. Kathryn had backed up
about 2 feet then lowered her head and just stood. So I stepped back to make a
draw and she moved in. I then moved the rope up by her face and then in motion
along her neck but not actually touching. I repeated a few times then began to
rub her with the rope starting on her jaw and down her neck. I repeated this a
few times on both sides before attempting to slip the halter over her head. I
reached for Kathryn's ears and rubbed them for up to 20 seconds before slipping
the halter on to ensure she was less likely to snap at me. I was able to manage
petting her on her forehead so I gave some nice scratches and pets up and down
her face for about half a minute before I started to stroke her on her jaw, and
closer to her ears. I then put pressure on her to run around the round pen so
she could get a feel of wearing the halter.
First Halter - Part 2
I kept hold of the lead rope and only giving light tugs from time to time to get her
used to the halter giving pressure. After a couple of times lightly tugging her lead
she started to get confused and bucked. I suddenly turned away and began to walk
away. I allowed the Lead rope to slip my hand to allow her to make her choice without
pressure from the halter just yet. Kathryn reacted to the rope as it dropped. Instead of
coming to me right away she got nervous about the rope dangling. She pranced around
jumping and bucking a couple of times. she had even nearly tripped a couple of times
but then seemed to start learning how to move around the dangling rope. After she had
settled down she moved towards me. I was standing leaning against the gate to allow the
mare space as she got used to the lead rope and halter. As she walked up to me she kept
snorting then nuzzled me a couple of times on my arms. I stroked the mare on her face
and then grabbed hold of the lead rope. I reached out to Kathryn to give her a few
strokes on her neck before moving away from her to create a draw instead of actually
leading her. I wanted her to first get used to the idea to walk along with me as I lead
her. From time to time I'd move the lead around to make movement to the halter so
she didn't forget I had the rope. After around 3 minutes walking her with the lead I
had opened up the Round Pen. Luckily no Neravontiis were loose on my Ranch because
if she got lose I'd just have to worry about capturing her in closed property. Luckily she
didn't tug harshly enough to rip free. That's until we passed by Duncan who snapped at
the air and pawed at the ground. When I tied up Kathryn I first tied her to a more distant
post from Duncan. I allowed her a few minutes to get used to being tied before I brought
Duncan over to a post that was about 7 feet away from Kathryn's post. I walked Duncan
over and made sure he didn't have too much rope.
First Halter - Part 3
Since he was good being tied, he knew the limits when the lead is short. I stepped
away from the two to allow them to get to know one another while Kathryn learns to
understand the halter and being tied. As soon as I stepped away there was thudding,
squealing and snapping. I held my breath as I watched the two. Kathryn nervous and
tugging at the rope, while Duncan was interested in the mare but also kept bullying
her and showing off. Out of nowhere Kathryn tugged at the rope and had slipped and
went tumbling backwards. For a short moment, she was sitting on the ground before
she stood up and shook all the dirt off. She then started to stay closer to the pole and
just moved to another side of it to keep her distance from Duncan. There were a couple
more times that she seemed to have forgotten the limit of the rope and gave some good
tugs until she had given up. After about 5 minutes had passed I untied Duncan and moved
him to a further post so that I could safely untie Kathryn. When I untied Kathryn I walked
her back and forth past Duncan. After passing by Duncan a few times I decided to walk her
around the ranch. She had pranced proudly as if she was following rather than because of
the halter. Her ears perked the entire time, and was showing off prancing, as we passed
other Neravontiis of mine in their pastures. A majority of my Neravontiis are used to me
bringing home more to join one of the herds. I had walked her around for at least 20
minutes around my ranch making laps before I had finally put her back inside of her
own pasture. Then I went to put Duncan away in another pasture next to Kathryn's
that had a few mares.
