Sam's family has been cursed for ages, ever since his great great grandfather killed a stray cat . The old man murdered the small animal when he found it wandering in the forest, there was no reason to kill it, only out of sheer boredom . This angered the spirit who protected the forest quite a bit . They left a curse on the old man, to haunt him and his family for generations . The spirit wanted to teach the man compassion and only until his family were truly compassionate would it break the curse . What was the curse you may ask ? Well, the oldest boy in each generation would carry the curse, that of which would turn them into a cat at the age of 23 . Only when the cat could truly fall in love with a human would he turn back into a man .
Sam's family had been filled with daughters for ages, and the curse hiding within their blood . After years of a female lineage Sam was born . The curse only lightly whispered about, but other than that- mostly forgotten . At 22 and turning 23 in a few weeks, Sam has nothing to worry about . Plus, there is this cute new girl at work ! She is deathly afraid of cats though, for whatever reason .

Calicos do come in male ! But are always sterile, I also figured it would add some irony for the main character to be a calico !
Just like orange tabby’s are 90% male, but do sometimes pop up as female : )
