Cat Name: Lilacpatch

Gender: Female
Rank: Warrior
Age: 42 Moons
Clan: CreekClan

Prompt: (201 Words)
Lilacpatch was lying in her nest in the warrior’s den, her tail curled over her nose and her chin settled on her paws. It was moonhigh and she was still waiting for the love of her life to return and she sighed, closing her eyes again. That’s when she heard the sound of paws stepping into the den and she looked up to see Koiberry sliding into her nest, and the familiar red tabby she loved, and his name was Sunglare. He had white paws and a white muzzle, and his eyes were amber and hard.

“Move over you slug,” he teased, nuzzling the spotted she-cat as she slid over in the nest and the large tom laid down beside her. Lilacpatch leaned into him, burying her muzzle into his fur. “How was the border patrol?”

He shrugged, twining his tail with her’s, “Nothing unusual, kind of boring.”

Lilacpatch chuckled, closing her eyes. “You remind me of the sun sometimes, with your red pelt. I can make you out in a crowd.”

The tom sighed, giving her a hard glare. “Kind of explains my name, don’t you think?” Lilacpatch chuckled at that, tail curling in amusement. “Let’s get some rest then.”

Cat Name: Turtlefrost

Gender: Female
Rank: MedCat
Age: 71 moons
Clan: ElmClan

Prompt: [294 words]
Turtlefrost twitched in her sleep. The same scene as usual played out in her dreams.

She had been a young cat at the time, before she received her first sign from StarClan, while still a warrior apprentice. She had desperately been in love with a fellow apprentice, a striking grey tabby by the name of Boatpaw. He was her dream then.
That had not changed now.

She had confessed her feelings, and for a time, they were happy. That is, until the day that first fateful sign came from her ancestors. She was scared to tell him.

She knew it meant their time together must end.

He didn't take it well, as she knew he wouldn't. He was angry. She was scared. But it wasn't so much the breakup that made this memory sorrowful for her. It was their last true conversation that didn't involve healing.

"You remind me of the sun," he had hissed. "You were beautiful; you created all the warmth in my life. But only looking back do I see the harm you have caused to me. Only now do I feel the drought of your actions, the famine of your love, and the heat of your desire to be on another path, one that does not involve me. Only now, in the fading light from your wretched soul, do I feel how much I despise you."

Though years later, long after he had confessed he regretted these words every day, they still stung.

And they would always sting, for both cats, for as the sun rose and the clan went to sleep, it reminded them of the fire of their love, and the setting of the sun brought back memories of her calling.

The same calling that tore them apart.

Cat Name: Mallowblaze

Gender: Tom
Rank: Warrior
Age: 27 moons
Clan: GealachClan

Prompt: “They’re back from the gathering!”

Mallowpaw blinked open his eyes, stifling a yawn as he lifted his sleepy head. It wasn’t quite yet sunrise, though the lightening sky told him it was close. He rose to his paws, giving a quick stretch to them as he licked the unruly fur on his chest with a scowl. He was alone in the apprentices’ den; his sister, Brightpaw, had gone to the gathering with the only other apprentice, Wildpaw. Mallowpaw had been assigned to dusk patrol the evening before, resulting in him staying at the camp rather than attend his first gathering. With a final shake of his pelt, he padded out of the den, blinking a few times more as he adjusted himself.

The longhaired tom wasn’t surprised to see a majority of his clanmates already out of their dens, sharing tongues with those who had been to the gathering. He scanned for his sister, and found her chatting with her mentor, Riverecho, as well as Ravenstar, Flamethistle and… Mallowpaw paused, not recognising the feline who had their back to him. He began to approach where Brightpaw could spot him, and huffed with relief when she came over to him, a wide smile on her face.

“Who’s that brown tabby?” He asked his sister, resting his head on her shoulder; the standard greeting amongst close felines in GealachClan.

“Oh, that’s Duck! She’s from the travelling rogue group that comes around every few moons. She’s two moons older than us, and is coming to live in GealachClan permanently!” Brightpaw smiled; Mallowpaw could tell she had an element of smugness to her for going to the gathering while he remained at home. Before he could ask any further questions, Ravenstar had hopped up onto the rocks, and called for a clan meeting. Only vaguely listening to their leader, Mallowpaw stole a glance at Duck.

She was fairly tall for only being two moons older than him, and had brown tabby fur with white patches across her pelt. He watched as she received an apprentice name, becoming Duckpaw, and touched noses with Flamethistle; it reminded him of his own ceremony, and he briefly flickered his gaze towards his mentor, Lizardfang. The clan began chanting “Duckpaw! Duckpaw!” and the newly-named apprentice smiled as she nervously glanced around the camp, catching Mallowpaw’s gaze for a short second. He realised he hadn’t seen her face yet, and now that her eyes were fixed on him… Her vibrant, green eyes glistened with a spark he couldn’t quite recognise, and her gaze seemed to freeze him in place. Duckpaw hopped down from the rocks, standing with her mentor as Flamethistle introduced her to some of the clan, and eventually headed over to Mallowpaw and Brightpaw.

“Brightpaw you already know, and this is Mallowpaw.” Duckpaw flashed a quick smile to the siblings, and Mallowpaw felt his heart beat quicken ever so slightly within his fluffy chest. He opened his maw to speak to her, but was (mercifully) interrupted by Lizardfang joining them.

“Morning all. I was thinking we could go for a walk around the territory, that way young Duckpaw can learn her new lands while we test these two on how good their memory is.” Without any hesitation, Mallowpaw bounded over to the camp entrance, Brightpaw quickly joining him.

“You so obviously have a crush on Duckpaw already,” She teased him, causing Mallowpaw to nudge her with his head as he blushed.

“No I do not!” He retorted, wincing at how loudly he’d spoke. Brightpaw merely laughed and fell back to join the rest of the group, leaving Mallowpaw to lead them into the territory.

--- Two moons later –--

“How do you have so much energy, all the time?” Duckpaw had paused her careful self-grooming to pose the question to Mallowpaw, who was currently bouncing around her, eagerly waiting for her to finish. He paused momentarily, tilting his head as he thought about his answer.

“Hmm… I have no idea! What do you think gives me my energy?” He stuck his tongue out, pouncing at his companion. Duckpaw and the siblings had quickly formed strong friendships, mostly taking form of Mallowpaw offering a silly comment, the girls jokingly mocking him for it, and ending in a tussle.

“You remind me of the sun,” Duckpaw meowed, that same, unrecognisable glint in her eye as she spoke. After several more licks of her paw and swiping it over her ear, she expanded on her point. “You’re bright, sure, but you make my eyes go fuzzy if I look at you for too long.”

Without realising, Mallowpaw fell to the ground with an ‘oof’ as Duckpaw was suddenly upon him, playfully biting his ear whilst kicking at his stomach. Laughter erupted from the pair as they scuffled about, kicking up dust and muck.

“You two are the worst!” The pair paused they playfight at the sudden speech, realising Brightpaw was chuckling at them just beyond the trees. Before they had chance to explain themselves, she jumped onto them, continuing the playfight.

--- Six moons later ---

“Hey, Mallowblaze?”

“Yeah, Duckfrost?”

“You do know we live in GealachClan, right? The clan that, you know, favours the moon?” Duckfrost was curled up in her nest, eyes groggy and filled with sleep. Mallowblaze was stood beside her; he’d gently awoken her with jabs to her shoulder, as he did every morning he wasn’t on patrol.

“Oh shush, you’d sleep until sunhigh if the clan let you!” Mallowblaze purred with gentle amusement, watching as Duckfrost begrudgingly rose to her paws and trudged out of the den, yawns falling from her maw.

Duckfrost snorted and gently butted the longhaired tom with her head. “You know, you remind me of the sun. You’re warm, which is great during Leaf-Bare, but you’re annoying when you wake me up early.”

Mallowblaze stuck his tongue out in response. “You know you looooove me,” He gently teased, beaming at her with a wide grin. She merely shook her head gently as she laughed, that same glint in her leaf-green gaze, hiding its meaning.

“Come on, let’s go get breakfast.”

--- Four moons later ---

“Hey, Duckfrost?”

“Yeah, Mallowblaze?”

“You know I like, you, right?”

“You made it very obvious, Mallowblaze. I think you’re the only feline in the clan who didn’t realise.”

“Oh.” The fawn-and-white tom shuffled his paws, hesitating to continue talking. He glanced up, catching Duckfrost’s gentle gaze waiting for him, a small smile on her muzzle. He felt his ears go hot as his heart boomed within him. Taking a deep breath, he asked, “Would you… I mean you don’t have to if you don’t want, but… Would you be my mate?”

Duckfrost began purring so strongly it reminded Mallowblaze of thunder rumbling in the distance. “Of course, you big furball. Did you know, you remind me of the sun?” She responded, the smile on her face unwavering, shining brilliantly towards him. Mallowblaze could almost melt right there.

“So do you. During the day, there’s the sun in the sky, and then at night, there’s you.” Mallowblaze gave a small lick to Duckfrost’s white head.

“You remind me of the sun because you light up my day. You’re always there, keeping me company, making me laugh, making things clearer…” Duckfrost paused, glancing at Mallowblaze, who was holding his breath as his blue eyes lay on her expectantly. “You also remind me of the sun because you make my eyes go fuzzy if I look at you for too long.”

Mallowblaze laughed, and pounced upon his new mate, feeling such happiness bursting from him that if he had any more joy, he would be as bright as the sun indeed.

Cat Name: Fallowbreeze

Gender: female
Rank: queen
Age: 36 moons
Clan: Glacial Blizzard Clan

Prompt: [1500 / 1500 words]

Fallowbreeze, born into Glacial Blizzard Clan and the only daughter of the clan's queen and lead hunter, was always a shy cat. The simple roles of her parents caused the young kit to become quite popular, much to her dismay. It didn't help much to have an older cousin who was the clan's future Necromancer either; cats of the clan - especially the younger kits - would come up to the fawn female to ask questions about him or just to gain points with her father, the lead hunter.

The young female grew to know the signs of when someone else just wanted to be close to her for their personal gain. Until she met Falconpaw, a black classic tabby with bright green eyes and only small flecks of white on her otherwise dark pelt. The young apprentice and her mother had just joined the clan from the outskirts of the northern territory when Fallow was just 4 moons old. Upon seeing this newcomer, a strange feeling washed over the fawn-and-white kit- a happy and floaty feeling that made her change just about everything she did. All Fallow wanted to do was to get close to this apprentice- to laugh at her jokes, to hang out with her all the time, to just be in her presence.

Time went by and the new apprentice acquainted herself to the cats of the clan which included the other kits. For some reason she had a tendency to hang around Fallow and her older cousin Timberpaw, who was nearing seven moons old. One day the two cousins were hanging out beneath their favorite tree in deadtree cove- one where the adult cats liked to hide herbs in the hollowed out trunk- and saw a familiar apprentice's tabby face appear at the outskirts of the cove. A little timidly, she approached the fawn-and-white female who was seated next to the cinnamon male, the black classic tabby's tiny ears pricked in curiosity while her green eyes reflected small glimmers of the sun above.

"Momma said I could find you here," Falconpaw said in a small voice that fluctuated in volume as her nerves came and went. "I-I was told to come play with you for a little while so she could go on patrol.... Is that okay?"

Fallow, whose heart felt like it was in her throat and whose stomach suddenly filled with butterflies, swallowed hard as she tried to figure out what was going on with her all of a sudden. She'd been completely fine moments before catching glimpses of this apprentice, she and Timberpaw had been discussing his work duties and his apprenticeship as they sometimes did when they got the chance to be alone like they usually did. Timberpaw, the mysterious loner of sorts, was sworn to keep the secrets of the family trade to just the family. He technically wasn't supposed to talk to any cat about it except those who were healers or those in starclan, but he told Fallow everything about his life. He couldn't comfortably keep a secret- it wasn't in his nature.

"What do you think, Fallow? Should we let her join our highly exclusive club?" Timberpaw asked with one of his famous playful winks and a paw tapped on her shoulder to get her attention. "Or should we make her scram?"

Fallow smiled awkwardly at her cousin before turning her head toward the tabby kitten, whose small white flecks took what little breath she had out of her lungs. The kitten suddenly couldn't talk, so she simply nodded her head yes.

"It's settled then," Timberpaw told the tabby happily, his amber eyes seemingly smiling just as much as his cousin beside him. "You can hang out with us. Boss says it's okay, so you're in!"

Though he meant those words as a joke, Falconpaw took them to be the truth. She came to see Fallow as the boss of their little group and started hanging out with her alone sometimes when Timberpaw had to go study healing and Necromancing with his mother or was otherwise unable to join the two females.

Falconpaw and Fallow would talk about Timberpaw a lot, but the fawn kit- whose head was still cloudy from the strange feeling that still came over her when just seeing Falcon, and grew stronger when the two were in close proximity- didn't seem to notice that he was the main subject of their conversations. Falconpaw would ask all sorts of things she had no business knowing, and Fallow would answer them as best as she could even though she knew she probably shouldn't. Her behavior and actions changed when she was around Falconpaw, as if she would do anything to please the classic tabby. Fallow yearned to be near Falconpaw as long as possible and as often as possible.

Yet more time passed in this way; Falconpaw and Fallowpaw (who had entered her own healer's apprenticeship by this time) continued to hang out as often as they could, Timberpaw joining in whenever he could manage a few hours away from his work although as the three grew older his free time diminished until there was just about nothing left. In this time, Fallowpaw's feelings for Falconpaw and she recognized the fact that she had a crush on the young female and that crush, having been nurtured through countless hours spent together, had developed into her first young love. Falconpaw on the other hand, never seemed to catch on to the fawn-and-white female's feelings even though they were probably quite obvious at this point.

Fallowpaw laughed at Falconpaw's dry jokes, even when the rest of the clan groaned at them or rolled their eyes. She went out of her way to lean in when talking to the classic tabby apprentice, and tried to put her paw on that of Falconpaw's, but she tried to do that when the two were alone. It was hard to be alone outside of the adults at this point, however, as they were both in the healer's apprenticeship and spent a lot of time with Timberpaw as well when he was studying healing with them.

One day when the three apprentices were done with their studying duties, Timberpaw asked his cousin, Fallowpaw to walk with him for a little while. It had been an eternity since the two had walked by themselves, or had done anything just the two of them and Fallowpaw was quick to jump on the opportunity. The two cousins said goodbye to the rest of the apprentices and headed out to their favorite spot in the deadtree cove as they had done many times before, the evening sky turning from dusk to a dark starry sky, casting them in the glow from the brightly lit moon.

"I need to tell you something, Fallow," Timberpaw said in a low voice, choosing to use the name he'd called her since she was born. The young tom kept his gaze on the grassy path beneath their paws as he spoke, seemingly choosing his words very carefully. "I don't think you're going to like this, but..... I think you need to stop seeing Falconpaw so much."

The molly stared at the cinnamon male in disbelief, as if he were suddenly speaking a different language. "W-why...?" she stammered, her heart beating uncomfortably in her chest and she started to feel her legs shaking beneath her. "Why would you say that? W-we're just friends..... of course we spend a lot of time together.."

Timberpaw shook his head sadly and took a seat on one of the trees that had fallen over in a windstorm. "I think you think you're more than friends. I've seen the way you look at her, and I'm sorry, she just doesn't feel the same way."

"How would you know?" Falowpaw hissed in a tone she had never used before, her words stinging as she spat them out.

"I know," he said sadly, not looking at her. "Because she kissed me yesterday. She told me she's always had feelings for me- since the day we met. I'm so sorry, Fallow."

At this point, tears rushed down her cheeks and the fawn-and-white molly turned on her heel and ran from her cousin, refusing to believe him. It couldn't be true, she told herself as more tears fell from her eyes. He was lying. He must be.

Fallowpaw crashed into something as she hadn't been paying attention to where she had been going. Looking up, she saw it was her love, Falconpaw. "I-is it true?" She asked, her voice breaking.

Falconpaw simply nodded and uttered a, "How pathetic," under her voice as she walked past.

Fueled by agony and despair, Fallowpaw hissed, "From afar you were the beauty that lit my path but when I tried to get close you burned me without thinking twice. Like it was your nature to do so..... you remind me of the sun, and I hate you!!" Once finished, she ran off swearing to never love again.

Cat Name: Snowbank

Gender: Male
Rank: Warrior
Age: 39 moons
Clan: Echoclan

Prompt:
Life for Snowbank is different than most other cats, living high in the mountains.

He was born with the name Snow. He had a large family which he loved to death and his life was amazing, working together with his extended family to better everyone.

As a kit, he used to sit by his grandmother and listen to stories of ancient beasts and battles, taking in every word she said, eyes full of adoration and longing.

Some days, his dear grandmother would look into his eyes and say, “Snow? You remind me of the sun, always so bright and happy, you’ll make a fierce warrior one day my love.”

As a kit he drank in his grandmothers praise proudly, purring excitedly and promising not to let her down.

He was closer to that dear old cat than to anybody else in his family, they went on walks together and simply talked about life, and love, and everything in between. She was the only person Snow felt he could be honest to.

Snow and his grandmother were on one of those walks when snow started falling. They were far from home and decided that they should turn back.

Quicker than expected, the snow became heavy and harsh, blocking out the sun and air in their lungs, freezing their paws to the ground.

Finally, when they could walk no longer, she collapsed in the snow. He ran up with a frightened yelp and nudged her.

“We can’t be far now Grandmother! Just a little longer come on!” He whimpered fearfully, but that was not what fate had planned for the pair that day.

She didn’t get up of course, being as old and weak as she was it wasn’t long before the cold took her under its great paws and whisked her away.

Snow screamed til his throat was hoarse, screaming threats to the ice and cold to give her back and screaming from grief and pain, sometimes both at once but the cold did no such thing and when it finally left him and the sun peaked through the trees he was alone and had lost his sense of direction.

His heart ached fiercely from the pain. His love burning through him and eating him from the inside as the finality of this settled in.

Hours later as the sun started to fall over the horizon,!and the piercing cries of wolves filled the sky, he realized he could not just stay and cry over his broken heart and he had to move on, it’s what she would have wanted anyways.

• • •

Snow never found his home again. He often wondered what had become of them and what they thought had happened to him. Despite the moons he spent apart he still loved them fiercely and kept moving, hoping against hope that maybe he’d find them again someday.

It wasn’t til seasons later when he came across Alaska.

It was cold and he was tired and travel weary when the two met, and as he saw the large creature from the side of his eye he thought he was surely dead, and that this was a god coming to claim him. But as he looked into the beast’s eyes all he saw was the same deep sadness and aching he had felt for all those moons alone.

The two beings looked into each other’s eyes and felt each other’s pain, understanding connected the two and they formed an unspoken bond, and eventually a deep love for each other’s companionship.

• • •

It’s been seasons since those difficult days of his past and finally, he met Echostar who offered him a place in Echoclan, a chance to have a family and to belong somewhere again.

So much longing filled the tom at the offer but his love for Alaska held him back, a nervous tension, feeling like a string holding him back from happiness.

He almost, almost declined but a small spark of hope filled him.

Echostar was hesitant to let such a potential danger into her clan but meeting the large beast it was clear they posed no threat, so the cat’s came to an agreement.

Alaska would join them but would not be allowed in the dens and could not be alone with any clan members other than Snow. She would gain an apprentice name and if eventually she has earned everyone’s trust and proved herself not to be a danger, she would earn a warrior name and be allowed to join, but if she stepped out of line or posed a danger to the clanmates, she would be exiled without a second thought.

• • •

Eventually, both Snowbank and Alaskapaw became beloved members of the clan and though she had a language barrier she learned nonverbal commands quickly and became a valuable clanmate, to the point where the clan almost forgets she isn’t one of them.

Snowbank did it.
Finally, he had a family again and was happy to be a part of it, he never forgot his old family but never truly regrets that fateful day that changed his life and left them all behind.
