“Hey, did you give the Guinea pig the plate of vegetables I laid out?”
Ryda smiled. She had just finished washing the plate that once held leafy greens and carrots when her phone lit up- a text from her mother. Her mom had came over for lunch, and always enjoyed turning vegetables on a plate into what looks like a gourmet meal for Hazelnut.
“Yeah mom, I just severed dinner! Delicious.”
There was a few minutes between her mothers next response. It didn’t seem abnormal to Ryda, but the response seemed to be nerve-wracking.
“...” A very odd response.
Suddenly her mom called her, and Ryda put the phone on speaker so she could continue to wash dishes from that nights dinner.
“Ryda, I know that... I understand you’re into cultures and stuff but I never realized you’d have taken it that far- I don’t... why? I thought you were-“
“Mom!” Ryda cut off her mom, who sounded frantic and near tears. Her shout made Hazelnut start squeaking, as if she were a burglar alarm.
“W-wait is that Hazelnut?” Her mom asked quietly.
“I mean... yeah? She’s in the living room in her cage, right where I left her?”
“Love, I thought you said you... ate her for dinner?”
Ryda almost laughed. She opened her phone to re-read her hastily sent message between wet hands and dishes. “Mom, I meant served. I served dinner. For Hazelnut? I just cleaned off the plate a minute ago.”
Her only response was nervous laughter and a deep sigh.
“Come on mom, why don’t you care about what I eat like Hazelnut, unless it is Hazelnut?” Her time was all-too mocking, clearly trying to lighten the mood.
“W-well, I don’t think a guinea pig would make a very good meal is all and I mean I just thought that-“
“Mom, it’s fine. I’m gonna go so I can keep doing dishes and then probably go play video games for a few.”
“...okay. Be safe. Bye Hazelnut!” the last words were seemingly shouted.
With a smile and a shake of her head, Ryda hung up, but still felt somewhat embarrassed that she had been so careless and worried her mother.

céleste had just finished studying for her english test the next morning and she sighed heavily, absolutely exhausted. it was way past midnight, and she'd have to go to sleep soon if she wanted to do well.

as she settled into bed, she remembered to text her american girlfriend goodnight/just let her know that she was going to sleep.

céleste squinted at the screen and typed, "i'm going to bed." she plugged her phone into the charger and set it on her nightstand, turning it on silent. now she could sleep.

the next morning, she woke up at sixty texts from her anxious girlfriend.

"did something happen?"

céleste frowned and wondered, what is she so worried about? from a closer look at the last text she sent, she saw that it said, "i'm going to dead." of course, her english wasn't that great and her girlfriend understood. there must have been a terrible miscommunication.
