Smokewhisper - Warrior of Cinderclan

Meet Smokewhisper

Smokewhisper was born as a stray in a farmers field. He was smaller and thinner than average, and though his mother stayed with him to nurse him out of hope that he would grow stronger, she eventually gave up on her kit and abandoned him in a field of tall, golden crops.

Smokewhisper's story would have ended there, were it not for Bear. The large German Shepherd mix found the kit while patrolling the field for voles and vermin. He took the kit in and hid him in his hut made of wood where the farmer would chain the large dog up for most of the day.

Under Bear's watch and guidance, Smokekit grew stronger and wiser, and his curiosity grew to draw him from the large dogs den to explore the farm. His eyes had a shine of wonder and excitement for the world, but when he met the farmers barn cats he found that not everything in life is so wonderful.

The territorial cats found amusement in tormenting the young kit by chasing him around and even going as far to throw him when they caught him. When Bear heard news of this, he was torn in rage and sadness, knowing that so long as the chain was around his neck, he could not protect the young cat.

The days went on, and Smokekit grew stronger and wiser. By the time he reached an apprentices age, he had found a loop-hole to the torment provided from the barn cats. He would even go as far to seek them out, teasing them by standing at a safe distance and watching until they grew irritated and decided to pursue him. At that time, he would turn and run, leading them down a winding and confusing path which always ended with him perched merrily atop Bear's den, the large dog standing with fangs bared in a clear challenge for them to step one paw closer.

The odd pair were the best of friends, spending time together and telling each other tales. Though Bear loved his friend, he knew that life on the farm wasn't ideal for the young cat, and so he told him to seek out a clan.

Bear had heard of Cinderclan from its old deputy who was passing by in search of cats to join. The tom was hostile to him, and their encounter wasn't the greatest, though Bear had grown accustomed to cats behaving in such a way to him. With constant pressuring and convincing, Bear eventually persuaded Smokepaw to give the clan a chance.

Smokepaw was accepted into Cinderclan and was given Hidden Flame as a mentor. He kept his past a secret, claiming to simply have been a rouge who wanted a clan, and used a stream which rested between his farm and the clan's territory to rinse away Bear's smell.

Clan life was good to Smokepaw, and he found companionship in the kind cats which were around him, but his heart always drew him back to his dearest friend. He sneak out often and return late, his pelt soaked and his excuses vague. Hidden Flame, being no fool, knew he was doing something which he shouldn't, but decided to let him with minimal restrictions. All she asked of him was to return before night fall so she could help him dry off before entering the clan once more.

Smokepaw was dubbed Smokewhisper, earning the suffix due to his secretive nature, and was given more lenient restrictions. He continues to visit his friend often, keeping the large dog a secret from his clan for fear of how they would respond. There were days when he debated staying or leaving, but the event which locked his decision in place came only a few months after he received his warrior name.

He was making his way back, wading through the water under the darkening sky, when he saw her: a tawny and white she-cat, her pelt ruffled and wild. Curious, he approached her, but stopped in his tracks as she turned sharply to him and lifted her lips to reveal her fangs, not hissing like a cat but instead making an unusual gurgling sound. Her eyes were wild and primal, and he felt her gaze analyzing him, finding every weakness in a millisecond as her mind calculated how best to dispose of him. It was chilling, and he inhaled to yowl for help, but it was the smell that drifted to him which held his tongue.

She smelled strongly of canine.

Not quite the same smell as Bear, but something stronger and mixed with the scent of a deep forest. He tried to speak to her, but when she didn't respond to the language the clan used, he spoke the words he had learned from Bear. Instantly, that hostile pose broke and she lifted her head, studying him in a curious light.

Her name was New Light and her mother was a wolf who had passed, leaving the she-cat to travel in search of a new home. Smokewhispers heart instantly went out to the wild she-cat and he began working with her, giving her the new name of Wolf Spirit and teaching her proper manners around cats to help her blend in. He led her through the stream, helped her dry off, then took her into the camp to meet Cedarstar. The clan was instantly suspicious, wondering if the she-cat was who Smokewhisper had snuck off to visit so often, and confused at her odd behavior and her inability to understand them. Still, Cedarstar accepted her, and from then on Smokewhisper refused to leave her side. He taught her everything he knew, even taking her to meet Bear often, and gradually the bond between the two became stronger until they had decided to become mates.
