This piece looks very nice. I admire the details in the face, as it looks like it has texture. I'm assuming you're going for a more realistic look, which you've accomplished with the dog's head. I can tell that you began to give less attention to the collar though, as you stated.
I'd recommend referencing a collar of that sort- but I think it'd look better if the collar looked more artificial to kind of contrast the face a little bit. The eyes look a little awkward- I don't know exactly what it is, but it's hard to tell which direction the dog is looking. You did an excellent job on the nose, the most I can say about that is to maybe add small details and zoom in on it a little bit.
As for the ears, maybe add a little more texture? They look a little out of place. When you're starting to finish up, I'd recommend looking at types of lighting to really give it a nice finish.
here are some pictures of collars you could reference:

In all, I think you did a very nice job with this.

wow, thank you so much! i didn't think anyone would be this helpful. i did focus most of my time with nose since it was one of the first areas i started working on and then i started to lose motivation towards the end (as you can see from the collar). i feel like the biggest mistake i made was not having a reference photo and i just did all of this off the top of my head with no planning whatsoever. i'll get back to fixing it when i find motivation too. thanks again. :D

You're very welcome! I actually thought that you referenced at least a little bit because this piece looks very well done. That's quite impressive. I'm glad my advice helped, and good luck!
