The hippocampus or hippocamp, also hippokampoi (plural: hippocampi or hippocamps; Greek: ἱππόκαμπος, from ἵππος, "horse" and κάμπος, "sea monster"), often called a sea-horse in English, is a mythological creature shared by Phoenician, Etruscan, and Greek mythology, though its name has a Greek origin. The hippocampus has typically been depicted as having the upper body of a horse with the lower body of a fish. (Wikipedia)

About
Also known as a water horse as described above, the Hippocampus is one of the main mounts merfolk would ride around on under the sea. Known to most "land dwellers" as a monster this half fish half horse creature tends to remain hidden to those neigh sayers who wish it harm or wish to write it off as a mythical creature. The Hippocampus unlike the land creature it half represents does NOT like to be in herds, they prefer to be on their own patrolling their own part of the ocean and only coming together when the breeding season begins. Foals tend to stick with their mother until the age of 1 year old learning all they need to know on how to survive in the great big blue and avoid human contact...that is until now. I had gathered a bunch of the top notch explorers with the best gear money could buy and set out to find these creatures; at first the journey was long and hard and many hardships greeted us along the way but eventually time played in our favor and on one sunny day we witnessed a mother and her foal for the first time. Managing to trap the mother we quickly slipped a tracker device on her before she could sink our ship and released her back to her offspring. After years of tracking her we have found out much about this mythical beast like the fact that they lay a single egg each breeding season and hide it in a cluster of coral where it tends to blend in with its surrounding making it almost hard to spot, the little fin on it makes it so its somewhat easier for the mother to steer her egg should the need to move it come into play. Scales grace the surface of the egg to protect it a bit better than those hard shells or a gel coating like most eggs. The foal once hatched remains hidden in the coral until the mother comes to retrieve it, mostly for feedings otherwise it remains on its own in its little home until the age of 6 months when it will venture out from the coral with its mother into the great big blue to learn what it needs to know before the age of 1 year when the mother would have already become pregnant with another and will chase her offspring off.
Dispositions
Female Hippocampi tend to be a bit more on the docile side until they have a foal or the breeding season comes around, then they become slightly more aggressive. Females are a bit bigger than the males as they need their size to control more territory for their nesting and food gathering while tending to their eggs/foals. If you encounter a foal on its own DO NOT try to touch it, the mother usually is not far and WILL SINK YOUR SHIP or in some dire situations take your air tank off and drag you to the depths of the ocean to drown you.
Male Hippocampi are a bit smaller than the females but are slightly more aggressive, even more so when the breeding season comes around. They have been known to attack anything from merfolk to whales if they entered their territory and got too close to them. Male hippocampi DO NOT tolerate other males and will seek any male intruding in their territory out and fight them to the death if need be.
Coloration
Hippocampi come in all kinds of colors and designs.
Traits
As of right now we have only found 2 species of Hippocampi. One with the legs of a horse with fins on the legs and one with just fins. The Hippocampi with the horse legs tend to stick to the warmer waters while the ones with fins tend to stay in the much cooler water. Rarely do these two ever come into contact but if they do and pair up, their offspring will only have one trait from the parents, either the horse legs or the fins.
