A good way to improve is to look at your own face when drawing expressions! (or looking at pictures of other people)
A lot of the expression comes from the eyes;
the way the lower eyelid rises up when you smile,
or the upper lid lowers when tired,,,
eyebrows are very helpful too!
(or um,, brow bones for ferals I guess, although I've drawn eyebrows on them sometimes,
just because it helps with giving them good expressions lol)
think of the bottom lids as if they were connected to the mouth --
if your character is smiling, the bottom lids are more likely to go up with the smile!
the bigger the smile, the more squinted the eyes become.
It's because of the cheeks; when you smile, the mouth pushes your cheeks up,
and in turn, it kind of squishes the skin under your eye!
and that's just for smiling!!
Maybe I'll draw up an example that will help better; I'm not so good at explaining,,,
and I think there's too much that I can type about it haha
