To do realistic scales you have to use a realistic shading technic... I use airbrush, coloring a dark silhouette with this tool settled in a brighter color the lightened parts of the drawing. With this technic you can do the scales as well, just by coloring the lightened part of each scale or making tiny, bright dots arround the body.
Sorry if this is confusing... I am not so good at explaining these things. But well, I tried ^^
