Art goes here?

Ink locked the chest, making sure his precious scrolls couldn't be stolen by any roaming thugs. The door opened, the bell draped of the door fringing sharp against the cold night. A viscet stood in the doorway, only a dark silhouette, almost resembling the inked countries Ink so often stared at.
"I'm sorry, were closed for the night you may come back tomarrow though." The shadow shifted its weight into the door frame.
"I need a map person."
"Well, we are closed, and I'm a cartographer, not a "map person"."
"Too bad!" The voice turned to a growl, "You're coming with me!"
Ink heard the floor boards creak a second too late. He snapped his head around, and ran smack into another viscet, this one towering above him.
Crack! And all was the hazy shade of ink.

Ink was never a fighter. He was a bystander. Sometimes he wished he wasn't such a coward, but nothing could change how his choice cracked and his tail drooped at any sign of danger. Except being kidnapped by thugs. Ink shot up, his teeth bared in a growl, but that snarl soon died as the viscet strode into the room.

- Ink is a cartographer
- Just a innocent bean who gets thrown into some crazy adventure?
- Uses staff as a weapon.
- Knows Tiki

This hurts my head to read,” April muttered, putting down the leather-bound, messily organized journal. “You sure you’re able to make heads or tails outta this?” She rubbed her temple with her fingers, glancing back to the viscet dutifully leaned over a workbench.

Of course I can! It’s difficult, at first, but if you pay attention to the right things… it all makes sense!

It all makes sense, huh?” April’s voice, and her expression, was skeptical. “Time travel and cryptic clues and this code makes sense to you?

Sure it does.

April hummed and opened the journal again without replying. She’d been finding small papers and pieces of some larger puzzle for months now, and she’d found out these weren’t the only pieces. However, she hadn’t been able to decrypt them herself, so she’d brought them to the smartest viscet she knew; Matthew Courtenay. Matthew had been excited upon finding the files and had put him in this beat-up little journal, and every time she found a new piece to this puzzle she’d bring it to him. It’d only been recently that he’d called her over, declaring that he’d figured out what was going on and that he knew what to do.

April, really, wasn’t even aware that there was something to do or a problem to solve. She’d just figured it’d been some strange text from the past, but she’d been wrong.

There! I’m finished!” Matthew cried, interrupting her from her thoughts and her reading. Her eyes stalled for a moment on a note written by Matthew himself, before she looked up. An eyebrow raised.

What are those?” she asked, staring at the pair of metal bracers in Matthew’s paws. Both of them had a turquoise jewel embedded into them.

They’re stabilizers! Well, they stabilize time and space, sort of. I had the help of Charlie - you know Charlie, don’t you? - to build a core for both of them, and they help keep whatever is wearing them stable. You know how Eterna is so weird, when it comes to dimensions and space and the like? Well these… help fix that! On a very small scale, of course. I don’t know if something like this could be done on a large scale.” He paused, looking up. “That would be curious, perhaps━

I’m gonna stop you right there,” April said, rising from the stool she was sitting on. “So what do we do with these? They look pretty neat, but they’re kinda useless, right? I mean, what do you plan on using them on? Something from the book?

Someone, in fact. The person that created the clues needs… rescuing. These,” he lifted the bracers, “will do just that. They left a list of all the places they would appear at; curious, it truly is! Some from millenia ago! The nearest one is actually only three weeks from now. It’s high up north, on the western coast of Vexia, in the town of… ah, what was it? Salz… Salzburg, yes. That is where they’ll be.

Do they say who they are?

No. Just that they’ve been wandering like this for very, very long. They don’t know how long, obviously; time probably doesn’t seem the same when you’re constantly hurling through it, would it?” He smiled faintly. “But, they call themselves Rift. They seem benevolent. They just need… help. They knew how to escape, but they couldn’t do it on their own.

Rift,” April mused. She then, rather sarcastically, added, “Creative.

Very. Now, then, run along. I’ve got tests to make. And I simply must contact Charlie about this completion! Oh, I’ve so much to do to prepare…!

April stared at him before tilting her head, smiling. “Alright, then. See you.

Of course!” Matthew called back, his attention already compromised. “Ah, yes! Be back in two days. We will set sail for Vexia then. It’s a long trip. Be prepared.

Yeah, ok. See you in two days.

━━━

The trip to Vexia’s western shore took two and a half weeks from their exit port from Leorin, which was a relatively short trip, in April’s opinion. Matthew was escatic the entire way, like they’d won the lottery, and April could only deal with his rambling for so long. Getting on shore was a breath of fresh air, though she still had to deal with him for another week… or longer, gods forbid. The closer they got to the specified day, the longer Matthew’s rambles went on for, and the longer he lectured her to be ready and prepared and to make absolutely certain that everything went according to plan. They didn’t want to ruin it, after all.

Finally, the day had come. Matthew was carrying only a satchel and a little wooden box with the bracers inside. April was carrying a backpack with their camping supplies, and as she walked after the much-faster scientist, she couldn’t help but thinking he could be shouldering some of this load, too.

They had been given, from the supposed being named ‘Rift’, coordinates that sent them into the heart of the forest outside of Salzburg. Matthew waited at the coordinates, while April went to find a place nearby suitable for a campsite. They’d come early that morning, because Rift hadn’t specified a time or how long they would be at this location. They planned on spending the night, too.

April softly whistled a tune as she set up the tent and then found medium-sized rocks to arrange into a circle for fire. She found firewood, set up the cooking spit above it and put a pot on it. She’d start making breakfast while they waited. She poured a tankard’s worth of water into the pot and started the fire against some tinder, letting it burn as she waited for the water to boil to make tea.

She was putting in the tea bags when she heard the deafening BOOM! of thunder, so loud and bellowing that it made her cover her ears and set them to ringing. She looked up; there were no clouds up ahead. It was dark, with only the vestiges of dawn streaking across the sky, but it was clear. Stars still sparkled and she could see the pink and black of the sky. As she gazed in confusion, she realized what it could be. “Matthew!” she cried, lurching to her feet and breaking out in a dead sprint towards the waiting spot.

━━━

It hurt. It always did, and they were used to it. It was always jarring, but she’d expected it sometime or another. They knew where they were headed, too; Vexia, on a world they often visited. Eterna. They’d known because a future version of them had warned them, had told them in what order every single appearance would be. This world, they found, had been rather familiar to them. They visited it often. Something about it… something about it drew them in. Drew in their very soul.

Their eyes opened, and they gazed upon the dawn sky through ruffled leaves. The air was crispy. It was likely autumn, or early spring. They were in a forest, outside of a town, they knew; the place was called ‘Salzburg’ in future-them’s notes.

They groaned softly, pushing themself up and shaking their head. Then they looked up, and met with the eyes of a viscet who stared at them with surprised eyes. They did not speak; they did not know if they would understand the language, after all.

Are you… Rift?” the other viscet spoke at last. They were surprised to understand them, but they nodded in response.

Yes,” they said. “I am Rift. You know of me?

I’ve found your clues,” the viscet responded. “Your stories. Your words… my name is Matthew Balan Courtenay. And I’ve… made this, with the help of some friends.” The viscet’s arms outstretched, offering a small wooden box to her. “It’s… to stabilize you.”

Stabilize me…?” Their eyes widened. It was the first strong emotion they’d felt in… so long. “Y-you’ve done it? You’ve honestly done it?

Matthew smiled. “Open the box. See inside,” he said, and they complied. Inside were two large, silver rings, embedded with a lightly glowing core of a cool turquoise color. They picked up the bracers, inspecting them.

You’ve done it,” they said quietly, joy alight in their eyes. They turned to Matthew. “I must thank you, truly. This━this is more than anyone could have ever given me. You’ve saved me. You’ve rescued me; thank you.

You’re welcome,” Matthew said. “Try them on, will you?

Of course.” They put down the box, but rather than fitting the bracers around their wrists where they appeared to be made for, they leaned down to snap them around their ankles. “There.

That’s great! I have so much to ask you, Rift. There’s so much to━” His voice was suddenly drowned out by a deep crackling. Both of their eyes went down to Rift’s ankles, where the anklets fired electricity erratically.

Wh-what is going on? What have you done?” Rift’s voice turned accusatory. She leaned down to try to pull the anklets off, but they wouldn’t budge.

I don’t know! They were━ they were working fine! This isn’t supposed to happen!” Matthew turned to begin digging in his bag. “They don’t come off easily━there’s a manual way to take them off though, let me find it━

The crackling grew louder and Rift’s fur was on end. Then, they heard the loud crack of thunder, and the mysterious viscet disappeared, anklets and all. Matthew barely noticed at first, holding his head from the pain in his ears at the loud sound of thunder. When he looked up again, still holding his ears, there was no trace that the viscet had ever been laying there.

A few moments later, April rushed from the trees. She looked around, startled and confused. “What was that!?” she cried. “What’s going on? Are you ok?

Matthew still stared at the empty ground in front of him. “They were here,” he muttered softly. “Rift was here. But….

But what? What happened?

They’re gone.

━━━

When their eyes opened again, they were standing in the same position they had disappeared in. However, they were somewhere completely different. Sometime completely different. They stood on green grass, mid-way up a small hill. In front of them stood a small village. They could see people in the distance, walking between houses and doing their daily chores. They felt a pang in their chest, and they swallowed hard. They felt stronger than ever before, but this hurt. They remembered this place deeply.

They walked forward on shaky legs, hope blossoming like a flower in their eyes. Then they saw someone; a viscet like themself, a tall and lanky one much like themself. “...Mother…?” they asked, their voice quiet as if they were expecting this, surely, to not be the case.

The viscet turned her head, staring at Rift for a long few moments before her eyes widened. “Cherish!!” she cried, dropping her basket of dirty laundry and stepping towards the viscet. “Cherish, you’re safe! You’re home! Where have you been, my darling…? Where have you been?

Rift smiled, tears pricking their eyes. “I’ve been everywhere, Mother,” they said, before embracing her tightly.

This was it. This was…

This was home.

Stephanos and Andrew

For most in his tribe, it is difficult to remember a time when Stephanos was without his treasured mask. He was young -practically still a viscling- when he received it from a close friend. This friend was well aware of Stephanos' affinity for taking on other roles. After years of watching him play "pretend" or put on his own plays for his friends and families, Stephanos finally shared his dream of becoming a real actor one day. The mask was a gift of solidarity, to let Stephanos know that someone was on his side and believed in his dream as well. Stephanos was instantly thrilled. He took the mask with him everywhere and spent months developing a character for it. Now, he is known as a quirky youngster, smoothly transforming between himself and "Andrew", who he becomes when he wears the mask. Some might find this habit strange, but Stephanos does not mind the stares. To him, odd looks just mean he has taken center stage.

As himself, Stephanos loves to perform for others. He is humble and friendly, if not a bit shy with strangers. While he loves to be the center of attention, he tends to get a bit bashful when the spotlight is thrust upon him unexpectedly. Stephanos much prefers to decide when, where, and how others focus on him. He is also known to be quite cheeky, and is not afraid to sneak in jokes at opportune moments. While not quite a rebel, he does have a soft spot for mischief and loves to try new things. His antics are harmless, and most just consider him boisterous and strange. That said, he is an appealing sort of strange that attracts both bullies and admirers equally well. Some see a free spirit that should fly closer to the ground, and attempt to clip his wings. Others want nothing more than to fly alongside him.

    Image
As "Andrew", this patched viscet takes on a very different attitude. "Andrew" likes to appear and disappear suddenly, sometimes popping into a conversation only to add a single comment before leaving. On other occasions, "Andrew" is just as active in conversation as Stephanos is. Their relationship is much like that of a ventriloquist and their puppet. Andrew is a rather creepy and morbid character, who frequently employs dark humor and likes to laugh at things that are not funny in the slightest. He is also very naive, and will believe anything that is told to him, which can lead to some wonderful improvised moments.

Dagan loves his feather necklace, and I mean LOVES. He never takes that thing off. The story behind it is quite peculiar, however. When he was very little, Dagan loved birds, and the air. However, within his tightly knit group of Viscets, he was not allowed to dream about flying and such. This is because they loved the water. Dagan's name even meant little fish. But Dagan still dreamed. He dreamed of flying away one day on the wind, going nowhere but somewhere. Everyday at noon-ish, a brightly colored red and yellow bird would fly overhead in the same direction, singing a loud tune of love and freedom. Everyday Dagan would rush out to see the bird, but one day the bird did not come. He waited and waited all day by the pond's rocky shore, waiting for even a chirp or the sound of feathers rustling. Nothing. Disappointed, he went to sleep. The following morning as he awoke, Dagan noticed that there was a feather resting outside his den; a red and yellow feather sat neatly amongst the pebbles. Immediately, he found some old string and put it on his neck, never to take it off again.
