April 28What is the first thing they tracked ?:
It was a charm.
Fennel grew up in a small but relatively tight-knit community in a section of the Forest Kingdom, and among his neighbors was a kindly but bold bluebird. She was a strange sort and insisted on always wearing a strange charm around her neck, claiming it was lucky, but she made for good company and had much grandmotherly wisdom to share. She and her partner were long-time residents of the area, and had welcomed even the most imposing of birds into their nest as family, and Fennel treated the songbirds in much the same way. They were family to him, perhaps more than his commanding parents who, truth be told, terrified him sometimes.
But on the day that Fennel began fledging, the bluebird went missing. A full week passed and she still hadn’t returned. Her partner was sent into a tizzy, exclaiming that she’d never be gone for so long if something wasn’t horribly wrong. It was a tragedy to many of the community’s families, but life moved on and so did they. All but the bluebird’s partner, and Fennel.
Fennel took it upon himself to find the bluebird, leaving the nest and his siblings behind while his parents were out hunting, determined to make things right. Almost immediately, he got lost. Against all odds, he didn’t meet his end among the dangers of the forest floor. But he didn’t find the bluebird, not his way home. All he found was a familiar charm half-buried in muck, and he took it with him.
It was this, he believes, that led him to miraculously stumble across several Guardians on a mission. When questioned, he lied about having a home to go back to, for he didn’t feel he could go back. It probably messed up their entire mission, but they flew him to the Great Tree where he’s lived ever since.
He’s known that the Tracking Chaw was for him, ever since he first learned of it.
As for the charm; he wears it to this day, a reminder of his failure and of the place he left.
