"A story?" The dark tom hummed in response to the littles before him, all adorning excited smiles at his foretold wisdom. "What do you want it to be about?" he questioned as he positioned himself comfortably.

"A romance!"

"HORROR!"

"Action! Do action!"

Pineroot let out a hearty chuckle that vibrated his entire body. "Alright, I think I have something that will make everyone happy" he cleared his throat in preparation. "Back in the days of the Petals, there was a tom named Pine that Dapples Sun, and a molly named Moss that Covers Oak. The pair were acquaintances but nothing more, not until a fox snuck into camp one night" he paused for dramatic effect, watching as the faces drew closer in awe. "Oak was having a late night snack, and was confronted by the fox. HISS! SMACK! YELP!" he moved about theatrically, mimicking the scene he was describing. "The fox was a mother! Her kits joined, and now Oak was cornered! She was too kind; avoiding a true battle so the momma fox wouldn't get heart" he smiled at the 'aws' from the young kits. "The young hero Pine comes to rescue! He comes up from behind and lets out a mighty roar, the fox kits fur bristled and they yipped the whole journey home" he smiled triumphantly at the gasps.

"What about the momma, Pineroot?" A young apprentice chirped.

"Well, the Mother fox was very unhappy that her kits were so frightened. She turned around and swiped viscously at Pine! He was left with a harrowing scar on his chest" he explained with a firm nod.

"And Oak? what happened to Oak?" Another chimed.

"Oak nursed Pine back to health as a thank you, and the two become inseparable" Pineroot smiled fondly, thinking back to that distant time.

"Are Pine that Dapples Sun and Moss that Covers Oak you and Oakflight's ancestors?" An older apprentice quizzed with a tilted head.

"Oh, well, you see -"

"It's something like that" Oakflight purred from behind Pineroot, nuzzling into his side as she came to aide.

Body low to the ground muscles tense and ready to spring at a moments notice Hawkpaw tuned everything out but the mouse in front of him. Having watched the small rodent scurry out from under a bush and into the open, the apprentice knew this would be the perfect moment to test out his hunting skills. Have yet to catch anything in his short time as an apprentice, the young tom was eager to prove himself.

Behind him his mentor Nightwind watched from a distance, her ears trained on the sound of the prey she couldn’t see herself.

Having not noticed the predator watching for a short distance away, the mouse simply went about its business, digging around the pine littered forest floor for its own food. Unknowingly stepping closer and closer towards the waiting claws of the apprentice.

In a quick moment of fur and teeth, Hawkpaw was on the mouse, ending it’s life before it could let out a sound of its own, thanking Starclan for a successful hunt at last.

With the mouse in his jaw, the young tom makes his way back to his mentor, his smile wide enough to be seen around the prey.

“See told you, you’d get it.” Nightwind purrs in approval. “Now put it somewhere safe and do it again, the mouse isn’t going to feed the whole clan.”

he heard his best friend scream in pain from a great distance. brackenstep was in the middle of fighting off another warrior from a different clan when he heard his friend's cry for help. his head turned swiftly as his jaw dropped. this made him lose his focus as the other warrior took a nasty swing at brackenstep's face.

brackenstep didn't care--he had to help his best friend. he was in trouble.

brackenstep ran away from the other cat in the direction of the screams. he had to save his best friend's life or he would never forgive himself.

he saw his best friend being pinned down by a cat much bigger than himself. brackenstep jumped in and tackled the other clan warrior, taking them completely down. his best friend was hurt, but still treatable. around this time, brackenstep began to taste iron; he was bleeding. he didn't even feel the pain, but he definitely tasted the blood. he was going to kill the warrior who did this to him.

a few weeks later

brackenstep had been given a scar on his nose from that pesky warrior. at least he was able to get his revenge before the fight was over. after the fight, he reminisced about the events, and came to the realization that he felt stronger and more empowered by the occurrences that took place that day. he sacrificed himself in order to save his best friend. now, his best friend can thank him for being alive, which carries a lot of pressure. brackenstep is happy to have been able to be there to help him. he will definitely remember that day for the rest of his life.
