Sandclaw stormed through the forest, muttering to himsel angrily. Willowsun tagged behind him, now wishing she'd never volunteered to come on patrol. But how was she to know that he and Wildeyes would have a spat that would leave thr deputy in a foul mood?
"Scout beyond those bushes," he snapped "I don't like the look of that mist."
"Yes sir," she murmured quietly and went slinking through the low foliage, leaving Sandclaw to seethe.
"Sir?" Willowsun called back to him "I...I think you should come here."
"Is there a problem?"
"We-ell....I'm not sure."
He hissed in frustration and stomped through the bushes, then stopped short as he nearly ran into Willowsun.
"Look," she whispered and he followed her gaze into the mist.
The tension between deputy and leader dissipated as Sandclaw came into camp, bracing the skeletally thin cat between himself and Willowsun.
"She just appeared out of the mist," Willowsun gasped by way of explanation as they were surrounded by concerned cats "Didn't say anything or act like she was hurt, just stared."
Unhesitatingly Wildeyes approached the newcomer, stretching out to touch noses with her.
The strange cat breathed out gently, then shuddered and shrank back against Sandclaw.
Wildeyes looked up at him and he shook his head.
"Well, don't just stand around looking at her," Wildeyes said, turning to the staring cats "Someone get her something to eat!"
The cats scattered and Sandclaw guided the thin cat towards a snug hollow between two tree roots.
"What's your name, young one?" Wildeyes asked, receiving a blank stare from the blue eyes shot through with pale light.
"She won't talk, we've been trying to pry something out of her for the past hour," Sandclaw sat down, leaving the thin cat to stand on her own.
She swayed back and forth, but didn't fall.
"Do you want to stay here?" Wildeyes asked, but again received nothing in reply.
"I guess she'll stayed here," Wildeyes turned to Sandclaw, "But she can't be left alone."
"Obviously. Who're you going to have look after her?"
Wildeyes tilted her head thought and was about to answer when the silent cat stepped forwards on twig-legs and settled herself against Sandclaw's side.
Sandclaw stared with wide eyes at the boney creature and Wildeyes smiled.
"Well I guess that settles that, but she needs a name."
"Wildeyes no-"
"Willowsun said she just appeared out of the mist, so let's call her Misty for now, I can't tell how old she is, so you might end up being her mentor."
"Wildeyes!-"
"Well, now that's all settled I'd better go see a about getting her something to eat."
Sandclaw was left spluttering while Wildeyes disapeared.
Misty sighed and pressed closer to his side.

"You shall be Shypaw and your mentor shall be Sandclaw, may you farewell in learning your place in the story of the stars."
Wildeyes smiled at the shivering cat and moved on to the next apprentice.
Sandclaw was caught between annoyance and relief at being named, Shypaw's (formerly Misty) mentor. The near-mute cat had been his constant companion for he past half-moon and part of him felt extremely protective of her.
Though she was older than the typical apprentice, she was nearly helpless in every way, she could barely even groom herself.
The moment the ceremony was over, Shypaw came slinking to his side, her belly brushing the ground.
"Alright," he said stiffly "Come on, I assume you can't swim?"
At this point he didn't even expect her reply.
For the first few days there was no coaxing her to even come near the water, but eventually Sandclaw's overbearing personality won and and with much sniffling Shypaw waded into the still part of the stream up to her stomach.
"You're doing good!" He called from deeper in the water "Now jump forwards and kick, you'll get the hang of it!"
She stared at him for a moment, trembling violently.
"Come on Shypaw!"
"No!"
The single word broke from her mouth and she turned and raced out of the water and disapeared into the bushes.
For a moment Sandclaw could only stare in shock, his ears ringing from that small single word that had cut through the air.
He found her whimpering in the den they had shared for the past moon, mud crusting her legs and leaves tangled in her fur.
"Shypaw-"
"Leave. Me. Alone."
Though the words were short and clipped, Sandclaw realized the voice was beautifully sweet.
"I...I'm sorry," suddenly he felt guilty "Are you okay?"
"No," she tucked her nose under her paws and refused to look at him "Go away."
Instead he curled around her, nudging her chin up until she looked was forced to look at him "Shypaw, I'm very sorry for upsetting you," his throat tightened as he looked into her eyes "Will you forgive me?"
She sighed heavily and ducked her head "Yes."
Suddenly he didn't feel like a mentor with their apprentice anymore.
"Shypaw? How old are you?"
She didn't reply, but laid her head against his shoulder.
"Please tell me," he whispered.
"Twenty moons," she murmured "But I can't remeber much else."
"That's alright," he soothed, sensing the tremble in her voice "Don't worry about it right now, I'll teach you what you need to know."
"You are now Shymist, for out of the mist you came to us and in nature you are quiet and withdrawn. Now you are a warrior among us, dedicated to our home, our clan, our stories," Wildyed touched Shymist's nose with her own then stepped with a smile.
Shymist smiled faintly and Sandclaw felt warmth spreading in his chest at the sight, he didn't fully understand his emotions for the gentle she-cat, but he figured that he would in time.
Shymist came up alongside him and nuzzled his cheek.
He beamed and curled his tail around her foot.
"I love you," she whispered.
