clearing his throat, winston avoided making eye contact with the only other man in the elevator. his shoes, his legs, the wall, anything but the other passengers face. breathing a sigh of relief, winston stepped out of the elevator as the doors opened with a quiet ding! winston froze in his steps until he heard the doors close behind him. he hated to do anything unnecessary in front of strangers.

201. apartment number 201. five steps, and you're there.

winston exhaled only when he touched his door handle, then inhaled again and held his breath. bees were attracted to co2, so he had to be careful aon how many breaths he took to avoid drawing a swarm of bees to his door.

grab the key. exhale. inhale. unlock the door. exhale. inhale.

pushing open the door slowly, winston braced himself for a murderer, or crocodiles, or an eviction notice. what he found was much, much worse.
his worst nightmare.
a. . . surprise party.

"SURPRISE!!!" grandeur screamed, simultaneously smashing two champagne bottles on the floor.
"happy birthday." naomi droned, hanging by her knees from the chandelier.
"don't die, winston!" abraham exclaimed in his country accent, leading around a team of seven ponies with boots on.
"we forgot a cake. whoops." custard sarcastically said, licking frosting from an empty cake dish.
"you're sooo old." prejudice snorted, wearing a neon pink boa and sunglasses.
"it's time for you to die soon!" ezekiel shouted down from space, using a bullhorn.

and in the midst of all this chaos, winston just sighed.
he was used to it by now.
