Second Chance Shelter wrote: Second Chance Shelter is a dog and cat rescue where you can come to find a new member of your family. We rescue and rehabilitate dogs and cats of all shapes and sizes so they may have the chance to be placed into a caring home. All of our animals are special and deserve a chance to be happy with an owner that will care for them. The question is: are you ready to love them?
Backstory wrote:Two more unfortunate victims of a dog fighting ring nicknamed the "Red Room." These are the two other dogs that came into the shelter-- a particularly cagey (and massive, christ) mastiff mutt and, oddly enough, a purebred Basset Bleu. They seemed to have escaped initially which alerted our shelter, surrounding shelters, and local authorities to the location of the ring. We're not quite sure what happened with these two, even less so than the other dogs brought in from the ring. Though the mastiff had no means of identification, it seemed as if the basset at one point had a chip implanted, but it has long since been ripped out. It seems as if the basset was also used as a bait dog, but lord knows what happened to him to make him loose all function in his back legs.
The mastiff was too volatile to be kept with the other two because he would snap at anyone who got to close to all four of them, but once they were separated he seemed to mellow out. During the basset's recovery, the big man was surprisingly gentle with the smaller dog, like letting the basset lean on him or even ride on his back. The basset was definitely happy when he got his wheelchair, though-- no more laying prone. They came in with sad conditions-- the shepherd was missing a limb, the basset was practically lame in both hind legs, and all of them were littered with untreated scars. The mastiff is still wary of the shelter employees, so one of the workers decided to give this kid a shot. He seems to be warming up to her despite the constant suspicion in his eyes.

Favorite Memory: Charles entire pupihood was spent indoors with no friends. At least it was true, until one night he caught a stranger sneaking into his home. The stranger was filthy and starved, clearly a stray. But, Charles naturally helped get him some food and tucked him up in one of his favourite cozy blankets. The whole night, the pair of them talked until sleep overtook them. It was the night he earned his first friend. [74 words]
