Maria rose early, for it was the ‘Day of the Dead’. She stayed in the Land of the Living, thankfully, but she had been sneaking out to go to school. She passed away at a young age from a sickness and always wanted to go to school, never having the chance but today was the day. The day itself had luck right? How would she be able to join not noticed? She wrapped her face with a scarf, got fingerless gloves, and tail decor. It was her culture anyways, to dress up, so it felt natural. She made it into the world, walking up to what seemed to be a college, then went up to the front desk .
“Hello.” she said in a thick, beautiful spanish accent. “My name is Maria, I would like to be enrolled in the classes you have here if I could?” They chatted, getting her chosen classes.
“Well everything seems to be in order. The school is quite big for to take on their own, especially on their first day. If you don't mind, I could assign you someone to take you around, give you a tour?”
“That would be great.” She took a seat, looking through her schedule to pass time.
She looked up so see a smart looking viscet, red hair, striped glasses.
“Hello, my names Seven,” he said, fixing his glasses with a nervous smile. He held out his hand for her to shake but she looked at in confusion. “I don't bite.” he joked. She relaxed and took it. Then on, she felt very comfortable with her new friend, learning more about education through each class. At lunch, they went outside and sat on a bench. Maria brought out a quesadilla, then paused. Her scarf had to be taken off if she wanted to eat. She slowly brought it away from her mouth. “Not hungry?” She shook her head. He gave a reassuring smile. “That's alright, my first time here was a bit nerve racking too.” As he ate his meal, Maria noticed some girls looking over at them. Maria folded her ears when they walked passed her, talking about how she dressed. She heard Seven stir. “Gonna throw this away, brb.” Maria sighed, fidgeting with her paws.
“Should I tell him?” she whispered to herself. “What would he say?”
“Hey new girl!” a snotty voice said. “Whats with the mask? To ugly you have to hide it?” They laughed. “Here, lemme help with that.” She grabbed her scarf, pulling it off. Maria tried desperately to put it back on but the girls had seen it. They stared at her, one even screaming. Tears filled Maria’s eyes as she noticed Sevens face appearing of the school. She ran down and into a forest like park, leaning against a tree, falling into a sitting position at it's base. She noticed a puddle and looked in, taking away her scarf, and revealing her skull patterned face. A crunch of leaves startled her and she raised her head quickly in fear to the sound.
It was Seven, looking exhausted but with a smirk on his face. The smile faded as he noticed her looks and Maria looked away to put the scarf back on. He sat next to her and was in a respectful silence, before he began to talk to her.
“One as beautiful as you shouldn't have to hide.”She looked at him, with embarrassment.
“You aren't afraid?” she asked.
“Curious, but no, not afraid.” He laughed. “ Looks shouldn’t define a person. I believe in the ‘actions speak louder than words’ type deal.” Maria nodded slowly. “Hey,” Seven said, nudging her. “Don't let those girls get to you. They’re jealous.”
“Of what?”
“You, no one could pull of that outfit, goes well with your fur, shades of your paws and tail.” Maria laughed.
“When did you become a fashion expert.” Seven gave a sassy snap of his fingers, making them both laugh. As it subsided Maria shivered. Seven took off his jacket, wrapping it around her.
“Come on, everyone goes through their first day. We can start over, maybe it won’t turn out so bad.” He got up, helping her to her feet. He held out his hand. “Now if I remember correctly, I gave you my name, but....”
“Oh dear!” Maria said, then took his hand. “Maria, my names Maria. Thank you Steve.” They giggled. They heard a bell in the distance and began to hurry towards the school.
“Don't worry, like I said, you’re gonna do great.” Maria smiled at the ground. He was right. It was good to be alive again.
