Saddle Meadows Pack

Pack Traditions and Lore:
The Saddle Meadows Pack believes strongly in family and try to discourage dispersal unless absolutely necessary. Their hierarchy is fairly relaxed, with most betas having a say in decisions although typically the alphas will only listen to the eldest wolves in the pack. Omegas are treated poorly, as they have to earn the trust of the pack which the pack believes is only possible through a harsh life which will determine whether or not the omega can survive.
Pack Structure:
The Saddle Meadows Pack is run by the alphas, with the majority of the pack being their children. The omega is often the newest wolf to the pack who has yet to earn trust but if a wolf commits a crime, they can also be demoted to omega role. The pack is initially hesitant when accepting newcomers but once a wolf has earned the alphas' trust, they are a part of the family just like they would be if they had been born into the pack.

Brownie grinned, tongue lolling out of her mouth as she bounced around her mate, Musk. They had just settled in Slough Creek's valley, specifically the area near Saddle Meadows where they could avoid the nearby packs, and the ground was covered in a thick layer of snow. The trees that covered Douglas Fir Slopes were still green, though some of the smallest trees had collapsed under the weight of each snowfall.

Musk sighed. "You really should conserve your energy for hunting," he said as he stepped closer to Brownie. A grin threatened to emerge as always, her energy infecting him with a sense of joy. Joy that he had decided to leave his home pack on Amethyst Mountain to pursue his dreams of starting a family with this wonderful young she-wolf. Joy that they had found a beautiful place to make their home before deep winter had come. Joy that soon, their pack would be full of barking puppies that would eventually become full-grown adults.

"But a little fun hasn't done us any harm, has it?" said Brownie with a sly grin. "After all, you're so busy with work; you insist on marking the borders daily, insist on patrolling the entire territory, and yet you never seem to have time to rest."

Musk huffed. "I'm trying to protect this pack--protect you!" But she had a point; if they didn't spend some time together, some time alone, then the pack would never grow and they would likely work themselves to death before they had more than one litter of pups. "But, alright."

Brownie yipped with joyful laughter and stopped bouncing around to duck into the small rocky den. It would be perfect for raising and protecting pups, just as the area in Douglas Fir Slopes would make a good summer hunting site. The two alphas spend the rest of the day in their camp, protected from the harsh winds outside.

"They're so beautiful," whispered Musk, looking down at the infant pups. One was a male and the other a female, both looking like the parent of their opposite sex.

"Indeed," said Brownie with a gentle smile, putting out a paw to prevent the brown-furred male from stumbling.

"Do you have any names for them?" Musk asked.

Brownie blinked. "Well, yes," she said hesitantly. "But I was thinking of Blackie for the female, perhaps?"

Musk nodded approvingly. "And the male?"

"Sparrow."

Musk chuckled. "One would think that such a name wouldn't be appropriate for a male, but I think otherwise. Sparrows fly swiftly, always avoiding the larger predators. They always survive, and fill our lives with song. May he embody these traits."

Brownie smiled, looking down at the two pups--Blackie and Sparrow--pleased that her mate hadn't objected to the names she picked out for them. "And may Blackie be swift as the night's shadow," she murmured, "clever and strong."

Musk loped through the forest, tracking the herd he and Brownie had scented months ago. Yet the trail had remained, and even while they survived off rabbits and other small animals, they had come closer and closer each time. Alone, he couldn't do much but maybe he could bring down a fawn. That would provide plenty of food for him, his mate, and their pups. Yes, that's what he'd do.

While on patrol Musk catches a strange odor. He follows it to reveal an adolescent bear making it's way towards then den where Brownie and the pups are!

Brownie and Musk eyed the bear warily. "Go grab the pups and run," whispered Musk to his mate.

"No, they're protected," Brownie whispered back. And indeed they were, for the moment at least, as they were huddled in the corner of the den. The bear growled and inched forward. The smell of the elk calves that Musk had brought back a day ago (no mean feat, as it took him the better part of two days) must have attracted it, and the bear seemed determined. No matter who or what it harmed.

The battle began suddenly, with the bear charging, giving little time for Brownie and Musk to dodge. While no sane would would dare attack a bear, Brownie had her pups to protect, while Musk had his mate. They were fighting for something greater than themselves and it showed. Brownie and Musk slipped in and out of the bear's claws, raking one side here, feinting there, always slipping free before either could get seriously injured. Musk yelped as a clawed hand caught his muzzle, flinging him backwards. His nose hurt and he could feel blood on the tip of his muzzle. Brownie growled, an angry sound, as she saw her injured mate.

"We can drive it off!" she said, panting slightly.

"We can, we will, and we must," replied Musk grimly.

Neither Brownie nor Musk knew how long it had been until the bear had been driven away, but eventually it retreated, growling all the while. Both wolves stood near the entrance to the den, watching the brown-furred creature run away. Thankfully, it had only been an adolescent, otherwise they would have picked up their pups and ran.

"Mommy? Daddy?" asked a small voice from inside the den. Sparrow's face appeared. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," said Brownie with a little laugh. Musk, on the other hand, was not fine. He had been injured by the bear and was now limping slightly on one leg, and the scratch on his muzzle was just starting to dry. "Let's get you something to eat."
