Short Story:
Yuki is different from other Hazats. Her heterochomia is one. Her eye condition altered her vision a little more beyond normal. But she has a very, very, very special trait. She can sense water. You may say this isn’t a great and oh-ho important thing, as all Hazats stay in colder climates where water was aplenty. Well, not really. Not all.
Yuki’s parents were among the Hazats that were cruelly trapped and taken away from their original home. The humans that took them wanted to sell them for profit, as Hazats were a really rare breed. Yuki was born under captivity, but everyday she dreamt of breaking free from the choking iron bars and into the sun, into the wild, where she knew her brethren were waiting.
In the warmer and drier climate, away from their original home, the Hazats felt very uncomfortable. The originally warm fur around their necks now became a suffocating chain. They needed water, water that the humans did not give them. And there was Yuki, young and bold, ever ready for a new adventure...
Yuki yawned and shook herself awake. In the cramped den, there was not much space to stretch. It did not bother her, for she never needed stretching anyway. It had to do with the way she slept. Yuki blinked and gazed around. The adult Hazats were in their depressed, saddened mood as usual, but that did not deter Yuki’s curiosity and thirst for adventure.
When she noticed her Mother gulping and glancing out of the den bars, Yuki, ever caring, scrambled over and asked, “Mama, what’s wrong? You look very uncomfortable. Is something bothering you?” Her Mother rasped, “Water. We need water. We haven’t drunk a drop in days.”
Yuki knew that was true. She herself needed to drink. Luckily, she knew better than to keep staring at the empty water trough or the bars, for staring did not fill thirsty mouths. Restless, Yuki got up and paced around the edge of the den. She had found several gaps here she could squeeze through, but none were large enough yet. Yuki arrived at the largest one and pawed at the dirt beneath it. Just a bit more. It did not worry Yuki. She was patient.
At last, she broke through. Digging under the bars, she slipped out into freedom. But it was not freedom she wanted, not yet. Raising her nose, she ducked through the shadows and slipped out of the barn they were trapped in. She was looking for water.
Water...Yuki angled her head thoughtfully, bicolored eyes closed. The presence of water made her spine tingle, her skull vibrate. She could not place why, it was just like that. Yuki turned this way and that, searching for the feeling. She found none. She slid around the rubbish boxes in the alley and turned into the street. The tingling started.
Yuki jerked her head down. By her paws, was a translucent cylindrical object. Filled with water. She picked it up with her mouth. Judging by the size, this could fit through the slot she escaped by. Luck was with her.
Yuki raced back, wings on her paws. She would never forget the look of sheer joy and hopefulness on the adult Hazats’ faces as she triumphantly brought the water carrying object back to the den. She went on escapades to bring them more water after that, and no one, except the Hazats, was none the wiser. Yuki even went on to help her fellow Hazats during summer and water shortages, after escaping from the den. But that, is another story altogether.
((P.S. Yuki found a water bottle. And I thought of this idea because, if her eyesight was affected, then other senses would be extraordinary, right? Hearing and smell being really good is a cliche already. Why not try something else, something not explainable scientifically? XD I hope you enjoyed this!)
