Barn Name: Dalair (meaning 'brave, valiant')
Extra: Dalair's Story:Dalair always knew he was destined for something grand! Well, that is what his dramatic side tells him.
Actually, he is lucky to still be here. Jackie seems to have tolerated his presence for the most part, but this boy is in no way related to him! Dalair was an accident foal.
While Jackie was just a young foal, a long legged, lanky filly jumped the pasture fence in a low spot.
She wandered away from the trapped herd and somewhere out there she met up with another herd, or maybe a bachelor. What happened exactly, no one knows, but she returned to the herd just a few months later, jumping back over the fence.
It was soon discovered she was expecting a foal, which was the primary reason for her return, instinct to raise her foal in the safest place.
Dalair was born a year later when Jackie was a yearling.
At this point Jackie had more or less established himself as the leader because, despite his youth, he was the only stallion around and the mares followed him by instinct, just as he led by instinct.
For the most part Jackie tolerated Dalair, regarding him like he might an annoying younger brother.
As Dalair grew his mother protected him fiercely, not even letting Jackie intimidate her when it came to her son. But, eventually the spunky mare fell ill and died a week later. Dalair was nearly a yearling at this point. The other mares showed little interest in him, and Jackie mostly ignored him, but as Dalair got older Jackie made it clear who the boss was, keeping Dalair in line with nips, kicks, and warning whinnies and grunts. Jackie had established the mares in the pasture as his own, and he was not willing to share.
Dalair was laid back by nature and pretty much content to allow Jackie to lead. Truth be told, Dalair had, and still has a unique personality. He has always been a spunky horse, just like his mother was. He is known as a goof, a show off, and a prankster. Maybe his mixed personality comes from having some very different sources to learn from.
Under his mother's careful teaching he became responsible, clever, and gentlemanly.
In an odd way Jackie has been a mentor of sorts to Dalair. As much as Jackie punishes him and keeps him in check, he has also taught him how to maintain a herd and survive in harsh conditions.
But, Dalair also had another mentor. The quiet, amiable mare,
Sanya. She was more or less a sister to him and kept him company when his mother died. From her he learned how to be gentle, compassionate, and even tempered.
At times Jackie would try to get between the two of them, not wanting Dalair to mess with one of his mares, but Dalair never would have risked angering Jackie enough that he might hurt Sanya.
When the mustangs were discovered it was hard for Dalair to adjust. He had always been under Jackie's leadership, allowed to more or less be a part of the herd, but kept from getting too close to the mares. Because of this his relationship with the mares had always been a wary one, him being careful not to annoy Jackie who showed a typical protective, possessive nature over his mares.
Now, he doesn't quite know what to do. He yearns for the sort of affection he has seldom had, but with his best friend, Sanya, leaving, and Jackie no longer around to lead him, Dalair is working in figuring out who he really is, and what he wants out of his new life.
it is complicated for sure, but Dalair is much more than his goofy, prankster like nature that many first see. He is intelligent, compassionate, gentle, determined, and a dreamer. These are the sort of traits that will help him push ahead and embrace his future, whatever it may be.
*I hope doing a backstory was okay as well as his relationship to Jackie. I tried to make the timeline of his story fit with the one represented on the event page, but if there are any bits that need to be changed for any reason let me know , or if doing a backstory is not okay tell me and I will do something else.
