"This poor filly was sold into auction out of the racing industry. She developed an odd gait and unsteadiness that they associated with a neurological disease, and was immediately disposed of, as is unfortunately common. When she was ridden into the ring at auction she fell twice, and the handler practically had to drag her the whole way through. No one else bid, and even the kill buyers knew she would be a pain to transport. We purchased her with the expectation that she would need to be humanly euthanized right afterwards. But thankfully, our vet brought only good news - it was a dangerous yet fully treatable ear infection. She has a slight malformation in her inner ears that makes her highly susceptible to middle ear infection, which in turn causes severe lack of balance and fracture pain in her skull. Left untreated she would likely have died simply due to the severity of the case. She isn't entirely out of the woods yet, but she is a young and otherwise healthy equine, so the issue is completely treatable with the help of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. We're hoping that once she is healthy and sound she will be a wonderful companion animal, though some occasional dizziness and or hearing loss for a few years to follow should be expected."
