it's hard to carry the old bag with him every where he goes. the straps are toughened from rain and dirt. sap from the trees of the forest where he lives has fallen onto the bag, over time irreversibly coating it with a thin, sticky film. the bag itself isn't tiny, but it surely isn't big enough to hold all the forest treasures reid would like to keep in it. it has two pockets: the bigger one's held shut by ancient velcro, the smaller one with a zipper that the novibat has to grip at with his teeth to open it. that's why he has a system: the smaller pouch for his favourite things, the few things that he can never lose; the larger one for anything he might happen to see on a hike and think about collecting.
where did he find the bag? did he buy it, was it a gift? he's not sure if he can remember the answers to any of those questions. logically, though? he's only had the satchel for about a year. it comes everywhere with him, and even on those nights where he leaves it beside a slowly dimming campfire he's sure to return to find it as soon as reid realizes that its familiar weight is missing from his right shoulder. the bag used to be red, a sort of mahogany, but its pigment has melted into the brown of the forest over time. reid doesn't care for the colour of the bag; however, if he should ever need to replace it, he'll be sure to pick up a green one next time.
his friends pointed out the bag when he first got it: but their comments of 'nice bag, dude!' and 'cool, what's it for?' gradually faded. maybe they don't notice it now. maybe reid doesn't talk to them enough now. he doesn't really know. he's not a loner, or asocial, but he does like being alone in the forest. his bag is a constant, but carrying anything else would almost be as disruptive as talking to someone on one of his daily strolls through the forest.
