First time you met her:
Serris sighed as she closed up her office, blond hair loosened from the braid she had done up that morning, sunlight reaching its final hands across her from the open barn doors. But she turned her head, curious and concerned, when she heard a truck rumbling up the gravel and dirt roadway, as well as a high pitched squeal of fright, nervous snorting coming from the aging horse in his stall across from her office room. "It's alright, Guy. You just keep eating." Serris assured the horse, tanned fingers scritching against the star on his forehead before she walked outside the barn.
She was surprised to see a neighbor exiting his truck, looking upset and angry as he approached, but also desperate for help. "Serris, don't turn me down, here. I know you're probably full up with winter bearing in, but I've got no room at all for her. My daughter's friend just left her in one of our fields and left. I wouldn't ask unless I had no one else, but please help me out here. I don't have the upkeep for another mouth, not with Admiral sick." The man pleaded with her before she even opened her mouth, Serris watching him, dazed.
"Uh.. Yeah, Tom, I can help out. A couple of borders took their horses with them when they moved last week, I've got plenty of room. But.. am I walking into anything dumb here, Tom? I gotta make sure she isn't gonna spread anything through my guys, here." Serris explained, sympathetic to the older rancher but knowing she needed to be careful.
"Doc checked her out yesterday, that's when I started looking for someone to take her. Said she's perfect, if a little on the lean side, but a good schedule can fatten her up. Got the paperwork in the truck for proof." He said, relief flooding his face and body as he slumped downward and then moved quickly back into the truck and handed her some papers.
It was after a quick read that they unlocked the trailer, and Serris looked in, face lighting with surprise at the soft coated mare. Tom untied her and backed her out, Serris seeing what he meant about looking on the thinner side, but when she took the lead from him, guiding her away from the truck and circling the mare briefly, Serris smiled when the mare nosed her right pocket curiously, sniffing heavily at her. Producing the forgotten apple treat, the woman smiled as she fed the mare; she was gentle as she took the treat, one large eye watching her peacefully as she munched. "She's a pretty thing. Give me a call if your daughter's friend decides she wants to take her back. I'll be happy to talk to let her know how much I charge for board, feed and the like."
"You're a lifesaver, Serris. Really. Madison might be over to check on her for a while, she really liked the gal but we just don't have the room or money."
"No problem, Tom, really. She's always welcome down here, you know that. Drive safe, tell Lizzie I said hey." Serris said as Tom moved toward his truck, shaking her hand once before hopping in and then driving back down the path. Turning to the mare, Serris smiled. "Well, let's go get you settled in with some dinner, then."
