If you mean images, it involves first making a newborn, in example, and naming it 'Adoptable1', save that to a folder. Then making the next stage, and also naming it 'Adoptable1', and saving it to a diffferent folder. Once someone has the link to 'Adoptable1' you then need to go to the image host, remove the newborn, and reupload the image of the same name in the older age, it will then appear as if the pet has 'grown' because the URL did not change but the image has. It might require a refresh but that's how it works.
If you mean on oekaki, well they just draw the older stage or additions on new layers and build it up as though it were growing, you only see the finalised one that is submitted.
