Lian is a hesitant young man who's afraid of genuine emotions. Reserved, quiet, shy...even easily flustered: they're all things he would be described as despite his initial collected composure.
And even if he's bashful, the boy has proven that he's no idiot. Annoyingly passive, yes- but not naive. One of Lian's best perks is that he is able to read people incredibly well, though he cannot communicate with them at that same skill level.
And, while he values the integrity of others, he's a fairly decent liar. During the rare moments that he does speak, he often uses his words dishonestly- be it to assure someone of their flaws or just to excuse himself from a large group of people he doesn't want to be with.
Lian may have many shortcomings, but deep down he is a gifted, lyrical genius- able to form his most inner thoughts into beautiful, bittersweet words that no one else is meant hear...and he's adamant about it staying that way.❁ ----------------------------------------------- ❁
"Why were you like that to me then?" she asked, her voice strained through her fury. Her eyes burned into him, causing the words he originally chose to get lost in his throat. "Im sorry."- - - ❁Lian was ten when he could first see them. Long threads on everyone's fingers- the embodiment of relationships in an invisible, red string that only he could see. The strings connected each person to another like a vast web. The webs could become frayed, knotted, or even cut, but it didn't stop more from appearing.
The death of one thread led to the creation of another, he soon learned from watching passing couples while he walked home from the market.
He never got an answer to where the ability came from, but he accepted it as it was. It wasn't until he noticed a second red string, much brighter than her first string (that paired her to Lian's father's) did he start to realize the consequences of this power. What's more was that the second string on his mother was connected to his piano teacher's hand.
The divorce didn't really come as a shock. The affair had been going on for 5 years, leading to his mother eloping with his teacher and leaving him behind. Lian remembered seeing how much his father fought for her to stay, the red string tethered tightly around his mother's finger while he begged, but it was a wasted effort. The cord that connected his parents had been severed. His father held onto his severed half of the cord.
His father was married once before him and twice after the divorce with his mother. He had a son from his first marriage and a daughter during the last. Every time Lian saw his father's hand, he noted the current wedding ring covering the past threads of marriages.
He left home as soon as he was able to, unable to bear his half-siblings'' resentment or his father's foolishness that made him fall for women who, clearly, only cared about his wealth. Lian swore to himself he would never become as blind as his father when it came to love. People always lied, but the thread that he could see revealed their true feelings.
The promise he made to himself broke not too soon after, however, after meeting a classmate of his. She, unlike most of the people he encountered before, was an honest, exciting, loving individual. He fell for her, and whether he liked it or not, he could see the red string forming between them both as the weeks went by. Their love blossomed into a relationship he greatly cherished.
They were together for 3 years. They became engaged, but it didn't go further than that. Even when she became pregnant.
"It's not yours." she murmured, tears streaming down her flushed cheeks."I've known." he responded simply, looking at her hand. The second thread appeared half a year ago, but his love had blinded him from the truth. "I've known...""You've known...?" his fiancee stared up at him, disgust rearing in her expression. "You knew and did nothing about it?" Their red string started splitting dangerously fast."Stress wouldn't be good for the baby."The threads were snapping faster.
"If you knew about the baby, then you must know what I did!" she cried, grabbing his shirt collar. "So tell me why!" Her voice was shuddery. "Why did you treat me as if nothing happened? You never changed the way you acted towards me...you practically ignored everything! Why...why were you like that to me?"
Regardless of what he said, he knew that it was all over. She was leaving him for someone else, and the proof was in the broken string that dangled from his finger."Because I love you." he thought."I'm sorry." he said.- - - ❁Last edited by
