personality:
Hyacinthus is a healing forest spirit who spreads life throughout their own mystical woods. Although they
seek to spread life, some who see them have incorrectly identified them as a harbinger of death.
First impressions;
Living in a dark, mysterious forest and being incredibly unsocialized with other people can take its toll. On
first meeting them, Hyacinthus can seem threatening, fearful and hostile. Constantly shrouded in the fog of
their lantern, they bring a sense of foreboding doom to any traveler that might wander through their
forest. Being caught face-to-face with this terrifying spirit of the forest might bid you one of two ways. If
they find you threatening or worrisome, you will be pushed out of the forest in which they reside. If they
deem you kind and pure, you might get the chance to see past their threatening nature to the delicate side
they hide for the forest’s sake.
On the outside;
If you manage to get past their protective front for the sake of their forest, you will see the person that
Hyacinthus truly is. They are a very delicate being and wish only to be helpful to the travelers heading
through their forest. They are a calming force, combined with the healing powers of their aura, and they
put everyone before themselves. Unfortunately they are also forgetful, impulsive, and careless in their
actions. They’re always in a bubble of confusion, leaving them in a very airy, dream-like state. Learning is
not their strong suit, and they are a rather slow learner, always forgetting the things that they’ve learned.
Still, they manage to be very sweet and caring. It’s not rare for them to get overly emotional if someone is
going through hard times. Crying at passerby’s sob stories is pretty much their biggest hobby. This can catch
them off guard, however, as they’re very gullible and distractable. The easiest way to get Hyacinthus to do
anything for you is to tell them something sad. It doesn’t even have to be convincing. Even still, Hyacinthus
can be very peaceful at times, especially when they’re alone in the forest.
With friends;
Hyacinthus is one of the most loyal, sympathetic friends you could ask for, but not everything about them is
positive. Don’t make friends with Hyacinthus if you can’t take incredibly blunt honesty. Although they try to
be as sensitive as possible, they are very unsocialized with others and don’t know where a lot of boundaries
lie. They can also be incredibly lazy, or just slow to help without any emotional connection. Unless
something sad has happened to you lately - or you’re okay with lying to them to get help - don’t expect
Hyacinthus to be ready to help you do anything. If you do, by some miracle, get Hyacinthus to do something
for you without any emotional response, expect them to procrastinate on it for as long as they can get
away with it. In fact, you might even want to expect them to just drop it altogether one day without even
telling you {although that might just be due to their forgetfulness}. Despite how frustrating their
inconsistency with work can be, they have a very calming aura. This aura is likely what leads to most of
their friends not even caring when Hyacinthus just decides to drop their requests.
With enemies;
Making enemies with others is not something that Hyacinthus does often, so there’s not much to be said
about how she acts around them. Still, if you’re an enemy of their forest, you’re an enemy of Hyacinthus.
They’re not very good at dealing with those that threaten their forest beyond scaring them away.
Hyacinthus is a very delicate being on the inside, and breaking them down emotionally is one of the easiest
things to do. The passion they feel for their forest helps them to protect it from threatening individuals, but
even still they can get discouraged very easily. This can lead to their more regretful nature, as they regret
their tendency to go easy all the time and not try harder to protect the things they love.
On the inside;
On the inside, Hyacinthus is much like they are outside. They are generally calm and cheerful but can suffer
large amounts of emotional distress when certain things happen. If their forest is threatened, their own
health will be affected. Even when a stranger steps into their forest they can start to feel uneasy or sick.
Although they are a healing forest spirit, their health is actually quite bad and is largely affected by the
state of their forest and the people in it. Even in their calmest moments - when they are healing their
forest with the aid of their lantern - they can sometimes feel a sense of impending doom if a threatener is
nearby.
what's with her lantern?:
Hyacinthus’ lantern serves many purposes. Firstly, the lantern lights their way through the darkest parts of
their forest. The lantern's guiding light is one of the few things that keeps Hyacinthus from getting lost
within their labyrinth like forest. It also helps them to guide the passersbys that come through their forest
and get lost within it so easily. Secondly, the lantern, along with Hyacinthus’ healing aura, helps to heal
the sickened parts of the forest. The lantern is detrimental to the forest’s health, as well as Hyacinthus’
own health. Without the lantern’s healing capabilities, Hyacinthus, along with their precious forest, would
perish.
Story:
It felt like it had been so long since the forest had had a time of peace. The travelers who came through
the forest had been becoming more threatening each and every day, and the auras of lost merchants
were becoming too much for Hyacinthus to deal with.
As their health further deteriorated, they continued to carry their lantern throughout the expansive
forest which they had tread through a thousand times over. Any hope of healing the forest in the
world’s current state seemed hopeless, but even the thought of giving up their precious forest pushed
Hyacinthus to work even harder.
Everyday it seemed more and more like their hope of saving their forest was just a useless endeavour.
Hyacinthus knew that this had been partially their fault, as well. They let their guard down too often,
let too many people come through their forest despite their intentions. Hyacinthus wished that they
could help their poor forest, at the very least, even if it meant that they were to disappear.
Here they sat, at the base of the tallest, oldest tree in their forest, the lantern’s smoke absorbing into
every branch and healing its wounds. Hyacinthus felt their eyes start to form tears at the thought of
losing their most precious forest. How could people possibly not see the damage that they caused to the
woodlands around them?
The low buzz of bugs humming calmed Hyacinthus slightly, although they still could not enjoy their time
sitting at the base of the gentle giant who they protected.
“As long as you are safe.” The sweetly-worded lyric rang out from Hyacinthus’ mouth as they leaned
back to rest their head on the tree. “Why must they do this to you? Can they not see that you are in
pain?”
To Hyacinthus, even the breeze seemed to sing its own sad song, carrying the gentle cries of the
thousands of trees dying in their forest. They could not bare to hear such pain as the forest seemed to
hold, but they continued to listen in the hopes of understanding.
A rustle in the nearby brush brought Hyacinthus out of their trance, and the wind turned frigid in
response. They didn’t want to stand and face another problem, another harmful human bent on
destruction, but they could not defend their forest by laying down.
“Why have you come here to my peaceful forest? Do you wish to disturb the gentle giants who reside
here as well?” The question was asked in a sad, low hum as Hyacinthus stood to face their trespasser.
Standing face to face with another of the reckless travelers who threatened Hyacinthus’ peace, they
tried to maintain the same aura. Holding their lantern tight in their hand, they stared down the
stranger. Although the stranger seemed harmless, in these times Hyacinthus’ could not be too cautious.
“Please, I’ve been lost for days! Your forest is like a maze and I can’t find my way out.. I’ve no doubt
that my parents have been worried sick about me..” The young man spoke, pulling at Hyacinthus’
heartstrings. They couldn’t resist such a sad tale, there was no way about it.
“Where are you heading, young traveler?” Hyacinthus asked, not lowering their guard but not being
able to stop themselves from asking.
“Towards the west castle, Mythorn.” He replied, speaking out the name of the kingdom town.
Hyacinthus nodded and signaled him to follow as they led the way to Mythorn. The two silently walked,
the only sound was that of the forest and their steady breathing.
It was long before they reached the edge of Hyacinthus’ forest and the walk was tiring. The young man
was surely more tired than he let on when they arrived, but Hyacinthus did not bother to say.
“Thank you, kind forest spirit,” He spoke, nearly in tears over the relief he felt to be free of the
labyrinth like forest, “If it were not for you, I might never have gotten out. I’m truly in your debt.”
Hyacinthus merely nodded at him, turning back into their forest. Looking at the trees that stood tall
around them, Hyacinthus felt as though they were slightly stronger now. Had Hyacinthus truly forgotten
their purpose in this forest so much that just that one deed improved it so much? Perhaps that was true,
Hyacinthus didn’t know, but perhaps they should just try.
