✪ Tignix Adopts Genetics Guide Part 5- The 'A/Sp/Rs/St' Genes ✪

These genes are responsible for the common striping and spotting markings that occur within tignix. They help with camouflage across many habitat types and as a result are common across all three subspecies.

✪ Alleles and Phenotypes ✪

The 'A' gene:

'A'- this is one of the two dominant alleles. When this allele is present striping and spotting markings will be visible. The markings will always be a darker colour than that of the base coat.
'Ax'- this is one of the two dominant alleles. When this allele is present and unmasked by the 'A' allele the agouti markings will be visible. As with the other markings, the agouti markings will always be a darker colour than that of the base coat. In it's homozygous form the markings will include eye rings, ear markings and leg and tail banding. In it's heterozygous form the leg banding is absent and the tail banding is reduced.
'a'- this is the recessive allele. No changes to the base coat are observed, both in its homozygous and heterozygous forms.

The 'Sp' gene*:

'Sp'- this is the dominant allele. In both it's homozygous and heterozygous form it will code for cheetah-like spotting markings, including eye rings, ear markings, tail tips and spotting across the face, back, legs and tail.
'sp'- this is the recessive allele. No changes to the base coat are observed, both in its homozygous and heterozygous forms.

The 'Rs' gene*:

'Rs'- this is the dominant allele. In both it's homozygous and heterozygous form is will code for rosettes markings. The homozygous form codes for leopard-like rosettes, with markings including eye rings, ear markings, facial spotting and rosettes across the back, legs and tail. The heterozygous form codes for clouded-leopard like rosettes, with markings including eye rings, ear markings, spotting on the face, lower legs and tail and large rosettes across the back and upper legs.
'rs'- this is the recessive allele. No changes to the base coat are observed, both in its homozygous and heterozygous forms.

The 'St' gene*:

'St'- this is the dominant allele. In both it's homozygous and heterozygous form it will code for tiger-like striping, including eye rings, ear markings and striping across the face, back, legs and tail.
'st'- this is the recessive allele. In its homozygous form it codes for tabby-like 'blotching', with markings including eye rings, ear markings, facial striping and blotching on the back, legs and tail.

*Without the presence of the 'A' allele all of the effects of these genes

✪ Allele combinations ✪

A/A- any of the markings coded for by other genes may be visibly present (see below)
A/Ax- same as above (all agouti markings are masked)
A/a- same as above
Ax/Ax- 'greater agouti' markings present
Ax/a- 'lesser agouti' markings present
a/a- no markings will be visible, regardless of the presence of the genes

Sp/Sp- 'cheetah' markings occur
Sp/sp- same as above
sp/sp- no markings

Rs/Rs- 'leopard' markings occur
Rs/rs- 'clouded' markings occur
rs/rs- no markings

St/St- 'tiger' markings occur
St/st- same as above
st/st- 'tabby' markings occur

Allele Dominance:

'Ax' is dominant over and will mask 'Sp' 'Rs', 'St' and 'st'.
'Sp' is dominant over and will mask 'Rs', 'St' and 'st'.
'Rs' is dominant over and will mask 'St' and 'st'.
