So I have this friend who's in the Homestuck fandom and I don't know if I should join or not???

I would definitely advise reading it, and just a little thing I learned the hard way, all everyone ever talks about is the trolls and they completely forget to mention the kids. the trolls don't come in until Act 5, but despite what people might tell you, DO NOT skip the first four Acts. if you skip them, it'll only make things more confusing later on, and definitely read the pesterlogs ( one of my friends learned the hard way that if you skip the pesterlogs and acts it makes everything way way more confusing later on )

I tried to read it, and personally was never able to get super into it.

However, I think it'd be worth a shot to try? I will warn that - depending on your age - there is a lot if language in it and maybe even some innendos(I'm nt sure, but language for certain) and stuff.
But I wouldn't do it just to please your friend, if at all it should be because you want to for yourself <3

just don't be super crazy like half the homestucks at conventions. Oh boy. I recently went to a con where they had a giant inflatable something and were smacking it against the walls / ground and nearly had a heart attack when it popped behind me.
