Try to study muscle structure of the species itself or similar species. For almost any animal or creature, you can find a picture of its skeleton. Put this availability of knowledge to your advantage. Also make sure to study the way animals move and how motion affects second-hand things such as fur, ears, the tail, etc.
One of my biggest pet peeves(although in case of art style I don't mind it) is the common pasted ears. There are special membranes that attach the foreward-most skin of the ear to the top of the cranium in most if not all cases of predatory animals.
Noses on mammals in the taxonomic family canidae are almost always square in shape and are not relatively flat surfaces like those on felines. This is one of the biggest and most common mistakes I find.
